trapping nuisance porcupines

 we recently purchased some land that has a old but serviceable barn on it ,unfortunately when checking it out today I noted porcupine scat and 2 areas where it had chewed its way in, as the my only experiences in trapping are mice and squirrels with a box trap,i need some advise on how to trap out these nuisances before they destroy the place,any advise appreciated -tt

I would try a 160 or 220 in both holes or put a coon size live trap right where they were crewing and put fresh bark in the trap or play with some wood oil's for making lure, poplar, i ve see them eat those trees.

Or use salt of peices of plywood.  Porkys eat plywood signs  or  building in thier habitat all the time

Thanks for the replies,I went over there this morning and set out 3 snares made of 30lb test trolling wire where the pests had chewed there way in,as it was all I could think of doing,naturally I didn't see any porcupines or they would have met my s&w.andytrapper when you wrote to 160 or 220 are you referring to conibears as I'm thinking of picking up a fur fish and game mag. and ordering a couple of traps but don't know what size as that seems cheaper than a coon size box trap,RdFx thanks for the advise on the salted wood as I have some road salt left from the winter I could mix it with water and soak some wood in it for a few days then use the salted wood for bait do you think that would work as I have heard of porcupines eating ax handles for the salt.thanks again-tt

 TimberTramp, I carry the 160's and 220's , if you decide to go that route.
 And Porky's do love salt.

I'll side with Tom and RdFx.  They seem to really like salt.  I treat my predator bait with salt and also my set to prevent freezing and I will catch 6-8 every year.

Thanks , for the replies,a friend is lending me a box trap,so i'm soaking some poplar and birch this weekend,I still have my snares out,Bogmaster if this doesn't work I might be contacting you.thanks-tt
