Trapping Bobcats

It is finally legal to trap bobcats in all of Kentucky this year. The limit is 3 per person. I know a farm that holds a few cats, and I have permission to trap it, but have no experience with cats. Can someone explain a good set to me for taking cats? Any special lures?

Not an answer to your question, but I'm wondering....Did you go from no season to a 3 cat limit overnight? We can't even get a 1 cat per season bag limit, even though it's legal to harvest 1 by firearm here in lower Michigan.

  There are many types of cat sets but none is more effective than a good visible dirt hole set.  A dirt hole set made in areas where cats frequent will nail them everytime.  A good quality cat lure is always an asset but I have harvested over 800 cats in sets made and lured for coyotes and fox.  Good set visibility combined with a good curiosity type cat or canine lure will do the job.  The type of areas where cats are thick in my locality is any place where high ground meets heavy cover or where an old logging road, power line, pipeline or railroad grade passed through a cedar swamp or heavy evergreen cover.  Cats like to slip along the edge of heavy cover where the going is easy while they hunt for rabbits and grouse.  One should keep their sets along and within 10 feet or so of the cover as this is where the cat will be stalking while hunting.  This way he will not miss a visible and lured hole set.  Also, if the set is strictly for cats and not canines too, one can use heavy guide sticks along side of each trap jaws to ensure one doesn't miss when the cat examines the hole and scent.  One doesn't want to use anything too stinky as bait for cats because it will induce rolling on the set and one doesn't want that.  Good luck!  Ace

Mallard: There has been a bobcat season in some parts of KY for quite some time now. This year it just opens in ALL of KY. I don't really know why. I guess the population is where it needs to be.

I have had good sucess with Big Dirthole sets in cutbanks and flagged sets.This was in Montana.

I'll throw in scratch-ups with flagging off to the side.  I most often use a slightly tainted bait, a good lure and always guiding.  If the flaging is off a bit this set will take an occassional coyote.

big dirtholes right near travelways. catch a lot of coons in them, too, in this part of Southeast Nebraska...but so far has been my best cat set, too.
I load up with fish and heavy cat gland lure, too.
I like big, flashy flagging, too...but off about 10' from the set to either side.
blind trail snare sets work well, too.
