Powder help 357 and 45 ACP
« on: April 08, 2008, 04:42:01 AM »
I am going to reload these 2 calibers... I am wanting to keep both in 1 type of powder... So far Unique and Bullseye have been the most popular reccomendations...

357 is a Colt Trooper MK3 6" and will be shooting 158gr cast SWCs
45 is a Hi Point and im not sure what ill be loading in a tip for it...

Just looking for some more input on a good powder for both calibers

Another powder to consider would be Titegroup from Hodgdon's , it works well with both cast and jacketed bullets plus a little goes a long way .

Plus a bunch for Unique,Bullseye is a fine powder, but  a very small change in weight can have strange results.   Doug

All the powders mentioned are good ones.  Bullseye would be my choice if I were limited to one powder for pistols. It does a decent job with most bullet weights with low charge weights. A pound of BE goes a long way. I use it for range loads for 9mm/38spl/.40/.45acp/.45LC/.44Spl .

I started loading handgun ammo in 1968 and have tried alot of different powders. Today I mostly load 2 powders, unless I run into a real bargain on a powder. I load Win.-296 for hot loads and Bullseye for plinking loads. Since your not going to load hot, Bullseye is all you need. I think you have to watch with Bullseye is that you can put 4 charges in alot of cases so you have to watch closely not to double charge. In your Trouper I would recommend you load .38 SP. cases and use 2.5 to 3 gn. of Bullseye with you 158 gn. semi-wad cutters. You can go down to 2 gn. and up to 3.2 gn. with little noticeable change in accuracy. If you will not be shooting over 25 yrds. 2 to 2.5 gn. will do well. If you will be shooting 50 yrds. and behond go with 3 to 3.2 gn.

I have used Bullseye, PowerPistol, Unigue, and some other pistol powders but the most versatile I use is Winchester 231.  It may not be the best for every caliber but seems to always give decent results.

John - I would suggest the following:  WW231 and Unique.  Both can be used for a variety of applications.

I always avoid the fastest burning and the slowest burning powders - too many mistakes can happen.

I would also suggest you look at some of the Vhita-Vuorori Oy (?) powders - they N320 and 3N37, also N105 may work for you.  HTH.  Mikey.

titegroup and unique are almost all of what I use for pistols, cept for h110 for the hot loads....

I really like titegroup for pistols, use unique more for revolvers.  Titegroup burns cleaner than unique does.

I cover all my bases with Bullseye, Unique and 2400.  If I had to get by wit just one powder, however, it would have to be Unique.
