The new ride is here
« on: April 09, 2008, 07:15:31 AM »
Well after 6 week what Dicks sporting Goods called  "back order". My new 223-synthetic is here and she has already been mounted in the form of a Mueller 4.5-14 APV...

I will get her out to the range this weekend (if mother nature permits) and get back with a follow up...

I'm looking for a .223 synthetic too but I want mine with iron sights as well. How did yous come? As a bull barrel? By looking at the H&R online catalog that's the way they come.

Do you mind saying what that cost?

Congrats on the new 223! ;)

The only syn 223 with sights is the Compact which has a 20" Superlight barrel, but you can order any of the accessory barrels with sights for about an additional $50, at least until they raise the price, was $47 last time someone posted on it.

I paid $219, for it at Dicks.  The trick is to do a special order with them you will get a better deal then the price they have on it.  I think next week they are running the varmit combo for $229.  They r in either 223 or 22-250.  I wen t woth the 223 because of the price per shot factor.

I do have a fella that said he would load some up for me.  I  think he is running 55 grain hollow not sure. Should get the cost even lower like that, thus adding to the fun!

I have been thinking about getting one so I guess I need to get it now.  What is the max range I could use this gun on varmints with a normal scope?

I am not sure what you mean by "normal" scope. If you mean a 3X9 or a straight 10X you should be able to go out to 300 yards with 50 - 55 grain bullets with no problems. Start out a 55 V Max at 3200 fps and you will get a 7.2" drop at 300 with a 200 yard zero. A 50 V-Max @ 3300 FPS will get you 7.7" low at 300 with a 200 yard zero. Going beyond 300 yards, you had better get the distance just right, because they really start to drop after that. You can get slipper bullets, but you get more drop at 300 than the 50 or 55 V Max, because they start slower. For 300 yard shots, the 55 V Max shots the flattest of any Hornady bullet. I did not check other bullet makers, they are in the same sort of range. If you are going to shoot at 600 Yards, then the heavier (match type) bullets will shoot flatter, but they will not inflict as much damage to a critter; just whistle straight through. Good Luck and good shooting.

Tim:
I think you got some wrong information on accessory RIFLE barrels.
5 years ago I paid $75 plus 10 shipping, no fitting.

      Now

             $87.00  barrel
              15.00  for fitting
              20.00  shipping to and from
Total       122

It's a much better buy to get a complete gun

thanks LaOtto.   I had a 17HMR and loved the way it shot, but I sold it for my Buffalo classic since I can reload 45-70 cheaper then buying 17HMR (and the 45=70 shoots a little further).  But the 45-70 is a little big for shooting gophers and the critters can move faster then then the boolets.  I think the 223 would still be cheaper then 17HMR since I would reload for it.
