firing tracer ammo in a colt hbar match

I recently picked up some fed.tactical tracer 64gr ammo to try,in my colt hbar match target but was stopped by a friend who said I would burn out my barrel by shooting it,is this true or can I just pop away,also are there any special cleaning requirements after shooting this ammo ,thanks-tt

Firing tracer ammo will not hurt your rifle, the tracer doesn't light until after the bullet has left the barrel and is usually about 50 to 75 yards down range also the bullet jacket is a standard jacket and the primer is noncorrosive so no special cleaning is required.  Don't expect much in the way of accuracy from tracers, they are meant to give you an idea where your rounds are going, not shoot groups.  Just be sure that it is good and wet when you shoot them and you have a good fireproof backstop (dirt only, no logs) as there have been a lot of fires started with tracers.  You will want to shoot them at dusk or full dark to get the maximum "well ain't that cool" factor from them.

I would agree with most of what LEO says here, however to be on the safe side, I would give the weapon a good cleaning. I once used tracer to convince an opponent I could locate him even in the dark, which halted his target practice using myself and my partner for the target. This of course was in a river bottom on the Texas side of the Texas-Oklahoma border.
Also, a reinforcement of LEO's warning of back stops for firing tracer. I know of one brand new "fun house" used for SWAT training that burned one night after an afternoon training session where tracer and other assorted pyro's were used during the training session. The boss was not happy, I heard.

Thanks for the replies,Dee&LEO, I tried out a box both during the day on targets,couldn't see the trace and at night pretty cool,but the snow pack is just about gone so I think i'll put them away for now.-tt

It won't hurt your gun but it can get you into all kinds of trouble.  They start forest fires.  I won't allow them anywhere near my place.  Be careful,  fire can start up several hours after you've finished shooting and are long gone.
