Whats wrong--I need help!!
« on: April 11, 2008, 05:54:12 PM »
My new Boyds JRS stock on my Stevens 200----I ordered new action screws as advised when changing a savage from synthetic to wood. But when I snug the action screws, it locks the rifle up---the safety becomes frozen and the bolt won't move. I can't see what is binding to cause this. Any advice on how to proceed?

I have now tried both the old screws (these are shorter) and the new screws supposedly for wood stocks (longer) and they both have the same result. I have determined it is the rear screw----when tightened, it locks up the bolt and freezes the safety in place. The short screws have plenty of threads to tighten----I wish I had tried this before I bought the longer ones.

My point is, where do I need to start sanding or cutting to get this pressure off the action? Right now, the only way things are working is when the rear screw is left loose. I can't see where it is binding.

You need to relief the area around the safety. Take a crayon and color in around where the safety is on the inside of the stock, put it on thick. Put the action in the stock and tighten down the screws. The crayon will show you where it is rubbing. It will either be rubbed off or shinny where it is interfering. Take a powered rotary tool and the cut out the offending wood. Use a chisel if you do not have a rotary tool. Go slowly when removing wood. You do not have to remove very much, usually. Take off a little then try the fit. Continue until you have a satisfactory fit. Some times you get one area so it fits and then another area interferes. Do not be afraid, just go slowly. The fit will be OK as long as you do not remove any around the top of the stock or where the bottom of the action rests. If that is where it is binding, then take it off here very carefully so you do not have a large gap. I have found the Boyd's stocks to be very good, but they are semi inletted, so there is some fitting that needs to be done. I do it with out thinking, it is just part of the process. Some times even factory stocks need some fitting to be right. I have bedded several stocks and I remove lots of material before I bed. Good Luck and good shooting.

It seems the problem was too much pressure on the tang area. After removing some wood in the trigger group area to no avail, I looked at the possibility of too much pressure on the tang. I put about 3 thicknesses of poster board between the stock's rear action screw bedding point and the action. This raised the rear end of the action enough that everything works fine with the screws fully tightened. If the rifle will shoot to my satisfaction with this setup, I may just leave it as is. Thanks.

I wouldn't leave the poster board shims in as a permanent fix.  Savages do like to have the tang floating, relieving the area under the tang and bedding the action to the stock would be my solution.

Try shortening the rear screw. It can go in to far and jam on the bolt. To check ,pull bolt out, put screw in with no shims
tighten it up and see if you can install bolt. If you can't the screw is to long. Just grind or file a little at a time till it fit's.
