Gee whiz neighbors,I hunt along the county line of Bastrop and Fayette counties.Quite a few piggies in the Colorado river bottoms and its feeder streams.I don't do it but other good spots for hogs is on Army Corps of Engineers land around some of our lakes.

How funny, I used to drive from Austin to Flatonia every night after work(used to live there) and about once a week I nearly hit a hog between Smithville and Flatonia.

When I actually moved into Bastrop the hogs were still there.

Mohawk, I'll have to take a run down to the National Forest.  However at my 71 years of age I don't do the long trekking for game.  :D   As I get older I hunt closer to the ground and closer to the road.  The 3 mile walk in wouldn't be much of a problem, but getting a 200 pound hog out might be. :D

Anyone interested in hunting the Angelina National Forest of East Texas should check out the Upland Island Wilderness Area.  Also there's lots of open land in the Davy Crockett National Forest.  Try the Big Slough area and along Hickory Creek.  Although I've never hunted them the Sam Houston National Forest and Sabine National Forest of East Texas should have a good hog population.  Just be sure when hunting these forest you know which is National Forest and which is private property.

I used to hunt squirrels at Davy Crockett for years. I'll send you a PM when I'm in the area again. I run to Lufkin every so often for work and always make time to do some scouting if I'm not on immediate recall to Austin. It's always nice to see the pine trees surround the city, almost like you are in the northwest.  And you're right, it is very easy to stray on to private property out there since posting is voluntary in Texas.

As long as you're gonna eat'm and don't lie about the situation ie high fence.  I'm OK with it.  The preserve I use is several thousand acres and is a nice weekend away hunt.

drdougrx,
I too am in the NorthEast and can't justify spending the $ for traveling to hunt free ranging hogs right now.
Would you kindly list this preserve, or you can PM me with info if you'd like. Thanks

Hi Six,

The preserve is Wild Hill in Fairlee, VT.  Here's the link:  http://huntwildhill.com/

Give them a call and speak with Eric.  Going in December so if you can wait that long, we can meet up.  They posted a pic of me with that big one I shot last year at the bottom of the hog hunting gallery.
If you like, please enjoy some of my hunt pics at:

All my hogs have been free ranging.   Often hunt on government owned restricted property and also have permission to hunt two, 160 acre parcels that are over run with hogs.

Hello Howie.  I feel kinda funny calling them free ranging because where I hunt, the area between Seymore and Guthrie Tx they are free ranging all over the place. Truly a varmint in most people eyes.

Wow Howie!  I see you have been busy since we last talked.  I'm glad you are back in this area.  Looking forward to hearing some of your hunting exploits.  Lets get together for coffee soon.

I hunt free range hogs with dogs. We use to catch them and release them in my high fence, I sold out and it went out of business. Now we catch them and sell them to people to butcher.  I had a small enclosure 140 acres mostly hogs sometimes sheep I started it as a place for special needs kids to come without having to go through a mountain of paper work or hope the buddy system includes them when donated hunts are offered, however I sold hunts to a broad spectrum of hunters to cover operating cost (alot of whom you would  hear telling people they would never hunt in a fence the week before or after they hunted with me,   but is their lie I let them tell it). Kids could shoot a sow or small boar about anytime, large older boars however were a challenge with or without a fence they are very elusive and will lay still and let you walk right past the brush pile they are laying in.

I don't think a high fence will keep hogs in, the only way i have ever kept a hog in a fenced area
was put the fence 12-18" down in the ground or run barbed wire right on top of the ground, if a hog finds a soft spot he is going under or through.

I hunt both as often as I can. Unfortunately, the free range's are not as close to home as I'd like, so that kind of makes things a bit inconvenient.
