carbine stocks: thumbhole types?
« on: July 15, 2003, 08:08:40 PM »
I remember the Fox Ridge [river?] catalogue with all the custom Contender stocks and barrels. The ONE stock I thought was really the cat's meow was the thumbhole walnut with a longish 'full' forend mounted on a bull barrel carbine. It had very nice lines > what I call "clean" lines,,and is pleasing to  my eye. Looks VERY functional, too.
Is this stock still offered?

If not,,I'm going to get in line to get one of Doc's custom stocks > saw them today and I think those of you who get one might be suprised at the woods he's using,,,wow!  We have a couple of custom wood purveyers [sp?] here in Atlanta that get wood from anywhere in this world. I even bought some blocks of exotic wood in 4" x 10" x 1" and it's too pretty to do ANYTHING with!
Doc just took some tools and started surgery with all his wood. Can't wait to see the results.

That stock is still offered, I bought one for my Encore from Fox Ridge not too long ago.  They had dropped the thumb hole stocks for a long time, but came back with them about 2 years ago, they are not listed on the Fox Ridge web site but are in the catalog.  You can get their phone number from their web site and call to find out pricing and availability. foxridgeoutfitters.com

I got one from Fox Ridge with the wide forend for my contender almost a year ago.  I love it!!!  One thing you must keep in mind unless you cock the hammer with your left thumb is that you have to remove your thumb from hole to cock hammer.  Not a big deal, but it took a little getting used to.  GOOD SHOOTIN',   Walt   :D

Alan,

I really like the look and feel of the Fox Ridge Outfitters thumhole stock and forend (the wide one they offer along with the stock) on my Encore rifle - it really is a great finishing touch  .  The stock arrived from FRO in excellent condition, the fit was good, the finish was excellent - zero complaints.  I have this set up on one of the FRO engraved / gold blued frames with a 26 inch 25-06 factory barrel with a muzzle tamer added by E.A.Brown - total barrel lenght 27 1/8, topped with a 6-24 Tasco on a weaver base.  I can't tell you how it shoots since I have been unable to get a chace to shoot it because of working outside of the country.  You could not go wrong buying one of these stocks to put on your rifle - another plus is they always sell very near the purchase price on ebay, in case you did not like it you could sell it and not lose much money. :D

I have been looking at them also.  E.A. Brown sells a stock that looks identical in an unfinished state for a little less money.  Gunstock Inc. also has one unfinished that looks pretty nice for under $100 for the stock and forearm.  I want to finish my own, not just to save money but because I want to do it.  Was also thinking about buying a piece of Walnut and carving on the sucker myself.  Need some basic dimensions though and I do not even have a standard stock to go by (just a bare frame right now).
