358 Winchester factory ammo in a Marlin 336 conversion?
« on: April 13, 2008, 04:12:18 PM »
There are a lot of experienced shooters on this forum. This is a question for any who have converted a Marlin 336 to 358 or 356 Winchester.  Do you use factory ammunition ( or reloads of equal pressure) or do you keep the chamber pressure down through lighter reloads?   I have a 35 Remington that I am ready to re-chamber but am not sure what chamber pressure to shoot for with my reloads.  Thank you, Garfield

I am not very up on marlin, but i know the winchester chambered for 307,356.375 had beefed up receivers to handle these loads.
the 35 rem is listed @35000 cup and the other are in 52000 cup range i would be very scared to do so i don't think it will take it.
I am sure a gunsmith would tell you yea or nea.
We was working up some 30-30 loads last week end and 3 guns were used a marlin lever action 336w a win 94 lever action and a encore.
working up loads for the lever actions we found that the marlin started to break the action loose before the win and these was not over max loads. the 30-30 is rated 38000 cup
so i would be care fulll on a swap up to those kind of pressures i may be wrong but from what i saw i think you are looking for big trouble and truth be known you probably won't get a reputable smith to make that change.

I just read Rangr 44's reply to Sharps-Nut's "educate me" post and that is exactly the Marlin that I have.  A 336-A in 35 Rem. with a 24" barrel and half-magazine.  Mine cost $249 about 6 months ago and is in excellent condition.   Rangr 44 says it is rare and worth every bit of $450 so I think that I'll just let is as is and try some Lever-evolution ammo in it.   This is a great site for information.  Thanks all for your replies.  Garfield

Lloyd if you had it all you'd do is chop the barrel off just ahead of the short mag tube and make it a snub nose rifle.  :o

not that one pal. Ive got the same gun in 3030 that was my fathers and i think its one of the finest made fit and finsihed marlin ive ever handled and the barrel lenght handles so well youd think it was alot shorter. If you ever get a chance to snag one dont pass it up.

Lloyd, I'll keep you in mind if I sell the Marlin.  But I think I'll just keep her for the time being.
