DD, you've said, at the first of your post, that we should be using ORIGINAL materials; but then at the end you lead us to believe that you've got leads on 5 gallon buckets of PB !

They'd better be from an OLD (1861-1864) Civil Defense shelter!

I am hurt that you would think I would push peanut butter that was non compliance with board rules, all peanut butter must be pre 1899 to qualify.

Booker T. was known as an educator; it was George Washington Carver who did the fundamental research on peanuts as a crop that would be both a cash crop and would restore much to the lands worn out from tobacco.

I think you're absolutely right. It may even be that commercial peanut butter is all post 1898 !

People often assume that GWC invented peanut butter because of his peanut research.

As I understand it, the bulk of GWC's research was into industrial uses of peanuts. The demand for them as a food item alone wasn't great enough to convince farmers to abandon other crops in favor of peanut production.

I've also read that he refused to patent food items, considering them "a gift from God."

It's doubtful that any pre-1897 PB exists, the process hadn't been refined and the oils and solids would separate over time. This means that we'll need fresh ground organic peanut butter, with none of the delicious additives and preservatives, to most closely replicate the pre-1897 foodstuff.

We'll have to buy that from the funny little guys in the tie-dyed shirts and Earth Shoes.

Could get pricey...

There may well be a few of those folks in FLOYD county, where we hold the annual New River Valley OPEN Cannon and Mortar shoots!

Tim, you are correct! since i live in Floyd County, i won't waste time talking about all the Hippies,and their food stores and art shops, or the World Music Festival they hold each year. People can google Floyd Va. and see for themselves! What i will mention is that i'm now the proud owner of a ZULU big blade spear, that Double D got for me in Africa. It's a pre-1899 design, and i will be using it to defend the honor of my Ironclad model at the New River Valley Shoot. I best not hear one complaint about the model!

Tim, One simple question, as long as cannons are associated with them, are other foodstuffs allowed on this thread or are your ideas of foodstuff armor narrowly limited to PB?

We have not winced at BREAD being used for packing for blanks.

We have posted pictures of MILK jugs as targets.

But then there are 'pureists' around that prefer that topics be either more serious or sorted more closely to ONE topic.

I'm sure historically one could find other examples of armour made from our narrow concept of what is traditional - as bales of cotton.

So I take no firm position on content - as long as the conversation is positive and upbeat!

Actually Lance that assegai is an iklwa . So named by Shaka for the sucking sound it made when removed from the body as the vanquished spirits were releashed. When the Zulu's weren't attack the neighboring clan to steal women and cattle these iklwas were used as a root digging and wood cutting tool.

So spreading peanut butter and ballistic jelly would appropiate.

I've never used PB, but I have been known to use dried pinto beans as shot, or to carve a slug out of a potato. I often use frozen cherry tomatoes, but they are heirloom tomatoes and of course pre-1899!

Frozen cherry tomatoes? Hmm. Havent tried that one yet. Heirlooms no less. What exactly is the target of these frozen cherry tomatoes? Say if I fire into a targeted hillside, I wont have to dig up a place to plant them in the garden?

They make nice red slushies on 1/2" plywood at 50 yards. I've never checked the back field to see if the planting method works! hah! I use the 6" mortar to spread fertilizer in our fields, why not use smaller artillery for planting!

Lance & I know about using golf-ball mortars for distributing post-processed hay in the fields!

Tim, you know i like to call them HORSE APPLES......... "apples" are not to be mistaken with the Donkey Drops, which are not as accurate. We really need to make a guage to sort them out.
