PHOENIX -- The mayor wants the FBI to investigate whether the local county sheriff has violated any civil rights laws with his recent high-profile crackdowns on illegal immigrants.

The "saturation patrols" have drawn protests from civil rights and immigrant-rights advocates, but they have drawn support from backers of Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio and from people who believe the government hasn't done enough against illegal immigration.

Get a load of this.  The Mayor of Phoenix, AR in Maricopa County has requested the FBI to investigate Sherrif Joe's tactics with regard to arrests, incarceration, and enfocement of illegal immigrants in his county.  Sherrif Joe has very broad national support for his policies, but it seems the Mayor of Phoenix is getting pressure from civil rights groups and latino associations that being impacted from these policies.  This is one of the major problems with this country when our political leaders succumb to the pressures of special interest groups at the expense of legal residents.

That mayor is worried about his Gardner, maid and nanny just think of the expense to hire legals for these jobs. The sherriff should make a really big deal out of this then run for mayor.
the nation that forgets it defenders will itself be forgotten

My great grandfather told me,"if you cannot do the time, don't do the crime".  This statement is as true today, as it was then.  Those illegals and objections to Sheriff Joes's enfocement policies, just want special priveliges that residents don't have.  So what if legal residents get pulled over for a minor traffic infraction.  There is nothing to worry about.  They are not going to jail, if the officer determines a probable cause because the driver swerved a bit more, than someone else.  It is only the violators, who are complaining or organizations, whereby its finances are derived from assisting illegals.

Arizona Sheriff Stirs Furor With Crackdown on Illegals

Friday, April 25, 2008 3:00 PM

GUADALUPE, Ariz. -- The self-proclaimed "toughest sheriff in America" has been making forays into Phoenix and nearby Guadalupe and sweeping up illegal immigrants, drawing howls of protest from the cities' mayors and other community leaders.

While Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio has legal authority to enforce the law in cities within his county, politicians and activists are accusing him of grandstanding and, worse, racial profiling.

A total of 150 people _ 73 of them illegal immigrants _ were arrested by Arpaio's deputies in the raids on heavily Hispanic sections in late March and early April.

He began pushing the boundaries on immigration three years ago when he set up a special unit to deal with people sneaking across the border. Since then, his office has arrested 900 illegal immigrants under a state human smuggling law and set up a hot line for reporting immigration violations.

He said the 150 people arrested were approached or pulled over in traffic stops because deputies had probable cause to believe they had committed crimes. It was only afterward that deputies found nearly half were illegal immigrants, the sheriff said.
The U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency said the sheriff has stayed within the bounds of an agreement that gave special immigration training and powers to 160 of his officers. The agency said it knows of no abuses by Arpaio's office.

Seems as if Sherrif Joe is irritating the local politicians.  One must wonder why they are so irritated.  Maybe because those who are complaining are illegals or have families here illegally?  Go Joe.

I'd gather the mayor must not be going to run for re election. Sheriff Joe has been re elected over and over, I can't imagine the mayors a very popular fellow in his town anymore.
99% of all Lawyers give the other 1% a bad name. What I find hilarious about this is they are such an arrogant bunch, that they all think they are in the 1%.
