Small Caliber Encore
« on: April 15, 2008, 11:33:22 AM »
Hey guys,

I am thinking of getting a 15" 22 hornet or 221 fb barrel for my encore.  Any info on these calibers in this barrel length would be great.  How loud are they? Is velocity loss substantial?  The primary use for this would be groundhog and red squirrel shooting around the farm.  They are destroying the buildings, and everything inside.  I would assume the fireball would be to loud to shoot w/out protection, but what about the hornet?

thanks,
vanbuzen9

If the range is reasonable I would consider the 22 mag.. with the cci maxi mag V rounds, it is rated at 1875 fps and all I shoot with a 22 mag gets dead and stays dead...

I've got a .221 Fireball Encore barrel and a 22 K-Hornet Contender barrel and I love them both.  Both the fireball and the hornet will serve the purpose that you mention very well.  I have only shot mine at paper and i always use hearing protection, but if shooting them without hearing protection was an issue the hornet would be my pick.  i would still wear hearing protection if it were me.

Good luck with whatever you decide.

I've got a 15inch Encore K-Hornet barrel and you could just use plugs to save your hearing.  You also might consider the 5.7x28 round depending on the range, I have one in a 14 inch barrel and if shots are not over 150yds you should be good to go.  Sound wise about like a 22WMR.

My 5.7x28 with Burris 10x IER scope.
