Jimmy Carter Lays a Wreath at Arafat's Tomb
By Julie Stahl
CNSNews.com Jerusalem Bureau Chief
April 15, 2008

Jerusalem (CNSNews.com) - Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter laid a wreath of red roses at the grave of Palestinian Liberation Organization leader Yasser Arafat during a visit to the West Bank City of Ramallah on Tuesday.

"He and Mrs. Carter and his son Jeff wanted to pay their respects to President Arafat," Carter's trip director Rick Jasculca told Cybercast News Service. But the former president didn't make any comments there, he said.

Dubbed the "godfather of terrorism," Arafat was linked to the deaths of two American diplomats in the Sudan in 1973 -- one of many terror acts laid at his feet. (See earlier story)

Twenty years later, Arafat became the first PLO leader to sign a peace agreement with an Israeli Prime Minister -- Yitzhak Rabin -- in 1993. He was considered Israel's peace partner (although many Israelis never believed it) until the beginning of the violent Palestinian uprising in September 2000. Arafat managed the terror war against Israel until his death in 2004.

U.S. officials have emphasized that Carter is visiting the Middle East as a private citizen and not as a representative of the U.S. government.

On Tuesday, the Israeli government refused Carter's request to visit Hamas-controlled Gaza. The former U.S. leader has angered the Israeli government over plans to meet Hamas's top leader, Khaled Mashaal, in Syria on Friday.

Most visiting American dignitaries -- including President Bush -- have avoided Arafat's tomb. Michaela Schweitzer-Bluhm, a spokeswoman for the U.S. Consulate in Jerusalem that handles Palestinian affairs, told Cybercast News Service that no active U.S. Executive Branch member had ever laid a wreath on Arafat's grave.

Carter first met Arafat in 1990, when Arafat was leader of the Palestine Liberation Organization. According to a New York Times report, Carter praised Arafat as a peacemaker.

Years later, Carter led an international team in observing the first Palestinian Authority elections that gave Arafat the presidency. (Carter also observed the 2006 elections that brought Hamas an overwhelming parliamentary majority.)

Arafat was the most frequent visitor to President Bill Clinton's White House. President Bush also dealt with Arafat at the beginning of his presidency, but after the Palestinian leader lied to Bush in early 2002 about a huge shipment of Iranian weapons bound for the P.A., he was shunned until his death in November 2004.

On Tuesday, Carter also had lunch with a dozen or so Palestinian civil society leaders and had what was described as a "wonderful round table" discussion with Palestinian youths that he and his wife enjoyed immensely, said Jasculca.

As President Carter travels around the Middle East he is "eager to hear viewpoints" about peace and the peace process. "Instead of talking, he's doing a lot of listening," said Jasculca.

Despite what I'm sure TM7 will say, Carter is absolutely the worst excuse for a President in my lifetime.  The State Department should revoke the passport of this national embarrassment.  Much to the delight of our detractors, Carter's actions and words, undermine and endanger our country.  Like it or not, Carter is an international figure.  When he panders to known terrorists and makes anti-American statements, particularly overseas, he gives aid and comfort to our enemies.  This old coot gets crazier with each passing year and for our welfare should confine himself to philanthropic causes.

I have been saying for years that "Jimmie" should just go to his front porch and enjoy his rocking chair...now I would like to amend that..
Perhaps it is time they got him that coat ..you know, the one that has long sleeves that tie in the back..and then take him off to "Happy Valley"...
Maybe Harry Belafonte would like to accompany him..

I'd love to see Jimma and any who would like to accompany him, go on a mission to the mountains of Pakistan and try to meet with Osama bin Laden.  I'm sure he would be welcomed and would be able to hammer out a deal where we could provide al Qaida with an annual stipend of, oh maybe three billion to finance their activities.  He's is such a proven peace-maker; how could he fail.

Carter is a disgusting looser. I can honestly say that when he passes away, America will be better off. It seems its the only thing that will keep this idiot from harming our country and our troops abroad.

I don't wish that he dies, just that he would shut up.

I've seen and heard where some gay rights nummies still blame Reagan for the aids virus getting started here in the U.S. Too bad these idiots don't look back about '78 or '79 when Carter was in office, and he let in those Haitian boat people.(somewhere around 30,000 of those refugees) It was just a couple years after that, that the aids virus took off. Truth be known, which we'll never know for sure, it was probably Carters fault that aids got off to such a good start in this country. Plus we had double digit inflation.  Poorest excuse for a president we ever had.  gypsyman

I love that last line..typical Carter..he will go over there and listen to a stinking terrorist..but pays zero, zilch ..attention to all the diplomats and our state department when they try to advise him not to meddle...and everybody thought his brother Billy... was the was the brain-dead drunk ! ::)

Too bad the wreath wasn't made out of C4 and nails. It would be a fitting Epitaph for the king of the terrorist subhuman muslims.

Quote
JERUSALEM —  Just hours after former President Jimmy Carter trumpeted Hamas' agreement to let Israel "live as a neighbor," the same terrorist leader he met with face-to-face vowed not to recognize the Jewish state.

Hamas leader Khaled Mashaal says his militant Islamic group will not recognize Israel but will accept a Palestinian state on pre-1967 borders.

Mashaal says the future Palestinian state must have Jerusalem as its "genuine, sovereign" capital. He did not say whether he meant the eastern, Arab section, or the entire city. He spoke at a news conference Monday in Damascus.

At least Carter is a former President. The Bush Admin can distance itself from this moron. However, this is a very clever move by the Democrats to send Carter there first. It gives legitimacy to Obama's already stated intention to meet with Hamas, Iran, Cuba, ect..... This is all staged for Obama.

God help us and our friends through out the world if Obama is elected. This idiot has already said he will meet with just about anybody even our worst enemies.

Thats because the real leadership in the Democrat party aspire to take America in the same socialist direction. They just use the freedoms that are available in our democracy to slowly but surly institute a socialist and government. Bit by bit, they implement their plan to force people to depend on them and their huge social programs.
