Went shooting today , 243 super lite & 25/06
« on: April 15, 2008, 01:44:50 PM »
Being as its groundhog season i figgered that i better get the varmint guns checked for zero , also did some test shots for the 243 , started with a base line COL of a factory Hornady V-max round , then took the seater up 1/4 , 1/2 , 3/4 and one full turn . Did 10 rounds at each setting .

The factory COL shot very close to were factory rounds hit with 1 1/4" groups , as the COL increased , the POI shifted up about 1"each time and the groups got smaller , by the time i got done the POI was just under 3 1/2" higher than starting but the groups were dovn to just under 3/4" .

The only real problems i had were the data tag that i had for powder and charge weight blew away sometime while i was shooting and i have no idea what it was as i don't record data till after i shoot the test loads .  :'(  :'(

Now for the 25/06

Started with 120 grain Speer BTSPs over 27 grains of IMR 4227 , this load was dead on to the zero that i set for the 100 grain loads last fall , so that works for me . Next i went to the 75 grain V-max loads , first round was 6" high and a stuck case , guess what , I forgot my cleaning rod . ( were is the icon for i feel dumb ) That ended my range trip with the rifles , but did fire some of my home made 45LC shot shells , worked like a charm ( snake rounds )

Data tag blew away.....I hate it when that happens.Thought I was the only one dumb enough to let that happen.Great excuse to go shooting again though.

I've got to say, until I read this site, I never heard of IMR 4227 for a case as big as 25-06.   Not sure I would trust that, to many better choices for that caliber.  If going for slower speeds I would have to go with something a little slower like IMR 4198.  Speer has reduced loads that are much safer.  I'd call Hodgdon to see if they have a better choice as they handle IMR, Hodgdon and Winchester powders now.  DP.

DP

The load is strait out of the Lee 2nd Ed. , max is 29.5 grains , load shoots very well and at about 1/3 the recoil of full power loads , still need to check it for FPS though .

Stimpy,

It has happened to me,both things.  I always carry a rod with me now.  I even have a three piece in my shooting box, just in case.  Just have to be fast with them tags tho. ;D

Good shooting anyway, even when it goes unexpectedly.  H4895 is most often recomended reduced load powder by Hodgdon.

DP, as Stimpy said, it's a Lee 2nd published load start is 24.6gr IMR4227, but max is 28gr at 53kcup and 2370fps for 120gr jacketed bullets, not the fastest or best powder, but it if works for Stimpy's reduced loads, that's great, saves on powder!! ;)

Stimpy, I mark the weight of the load on each case with a fine tipped marker, then all I need to know is the powder/primer/case/COL which are listed in my loading record. I've had my loads get dumped before, with em all marked, it was easy to put them back in order since they're progressive in .5gr or less increments.

Interesting experiment with the seating depth, thanks for sharing!

Been there, done that with the cleaning rod left at home, I carry a section of aluminum rod in my shooting box for that, just drop it through the bore. ;)

Tim

Your right the 29.5gr is for the 100gr bullets , one of these days i have to move my comp to my gun room so i can look before i type . Thanks for the QUICK catch .  ;D

I may have to give the marker thing a go , also going to find a 8" peice of brass rod stock about 20 cal to keep in the range box , some times i can just tap on the chamber and it pops out  , not this time .  :o ( forgot to remove case lube )
