454 460 casull question
« on: April 16, 2008, 11:09:16 AM »
I was talking to the older man who sells ammo for most all cal. at the Tulsa gun show and he was telling me that I think not for sure that with a 460 casull  you could shoot the 454 casull ammo and also 45 long colt. at the time I was asking about ammo for the 45 Winchester mag. and cannot remember for sure and he may not know what he is talking about. Anyone know the answer for sure?

So then does this mean I can buy a 460 casull barrel for the encore and shoot all three rounds? so the next question would be does Thompson make a barrel or would I need to go to a custom shop like mgm or some other brand. The guys at the mgm table at the gun show said they could make a barrel for any cal.

So then if I get a 460SW barrel then I will be able to shoot all three loads. One more question how is the recoil on the 460 and 454 with the 15 inch barrel. I have a G2 12inch bbl in 44 mag and it has a pretty good kick are they all about the same?

i think you can shoot them, but accuracy may or may not be that good.  if you have a custom .460 barrel with a real throat and not a forcing cone, then i think shooting the shorter loads would be much less accurate.  if your barrel has a forcing cone, like the factory t/c prohunter, then the shorter loads may shoot better.

accuracy is no problem with factory tc barrel
you just have to find the right load!
recoil is a bit stouter than the 44mag

The 454 Casull was the most accurate out of my .460 S&W Katahdan barrel. .45 Colt also shot very nicely. Just be real sure to clean after shooting the shorter rounds to get rid of the "ring" that will be left in the chamber.

454 Casull is all you will need.

I have a 12" barrel shortened from 15" by SSK and installed a 6 screw T'SOB base with 3 rings.  Full power Casull loads are very accurate reloading 360 grain LBT bullets with H-110.  I don’t shoot 45 Colts out of it, but it’s nice to have an option.

DEACONLLB, T/C makes a factory S&W 460 Mag barrel and they indeed shoot the 454 Casull and the 45 Colt as well. I do it all the time. The accuracy remains good even with the 45 Colts and 454 Casulls. As for the recoil, that 44 Mag would be considered a light recoiling gun compared to the 454 Casull or S&W 460 Mag.

I also have a 460 S&W barrel and it most certianly shoots the 454 and 45 colt . I found that I get better accuracy from my 454casull loads. I almost had a real bad day though I could not find load info for the 460 S&W utilizing cast bullets particularly 335 cast bullets and I loaded them down even by 10%. NOw unless I bobooded some how when I shot one of them it was unusually hard on the hand and I had to push the case out of the barrel with a dow rod. To my horror  the case was split all the way up to the end of the case. Then two shoots later my scope broke.I checked the gun and chamber area real well before I shot it again of course. I luckily found no problem with the gun so I shot it and then the scope broke a thoughly bad day at the range. If anyone has some tried true and tested handload for a 460 using cast ullets with either 300 or 335 grain bullets will someone put them on here .thanks .

One incredibly lucky guy!

That's true.  My Thompson/Center Custom shop Encore handgun barrel is one of the most accurate barrels I own.  This 3 shot group was done at 100 yards and measures about 0.561 inches from center to center.  Yes, I know there are only two holes.  The top hole is slightly larger than the other one because two bullets went through it.

If you can shoot a .45 Colt in it then you can also shoot a .45 Schofield in it.
Just another plinking round for the .460 S&W barrel.  8)

Enjoy, Doc
