460 dies work for 454 and 45?

Hello,

I just about to pull the trigger on a reloading starter kit, I have never rolled my own, but with ammo prices these days i figured its time to start,

I have a couple firearms for .45 colt, but am going to be building a encore in 460 s&w. I was wondering if i got the .460 die set hornady makes, if i could also use the same dies for .45 colt and .454 casull?

I want to spend as little as possible and it would be awsome if i could use one die set for all 3. is this possible or do i need 3 seperate die sets?

I'll give you a maybe , let me explain , with the 460 being a much longer case than the 45LC you may run into problems with the 460 dies ( bell and seater ) being to deep to reach the colt cases , you may be better off to go with the 45 Colt dies and adjust them up to fit the 454 and 460 cases .

The down side to this is that you will not be able to completely re-size the 454 and 460 cases , were talking aboit less than .060 of the very bottom of the case though . If it were me I would pick up a set of carbide dies for the 45LC and then also pick up a lone 460 sizer die .

I have a die set which is made for .45 colt/ 454 casull, but wouldn't fit the .460.

You would have to ask hornady, but I really doubt it would work.  

The other calibers would size in the sizing die, but the expander die, and the seater/crimp die would most likely be too long in this case for the .45colt, especially coming down from the .460.  For this you would have to know the minimum coal capability of this die, and also how far into the die mouth the expander or crimper lies.

Some die companies offer different die sets in each caliber. Not sure why but in my mind something may be different
I do shoot both 45C and 454 in my Ruger and use the same dies for both.

When you say it woln't fit , please explain as i don't load for the 460 S&W but do for the 45LC and 454 ?

I bought the 45LC die set and then I purchased the 460S&W sizing die....

So its sounds like, im best buyung the .45lc dies for .45lc and .454 casull, then buying a seperate die set for .460 s&w. I Know i needed 2 shellholders since i read the .460 was real tight in the .45lc shell holders.

No biggy, im sure i can pick up some 45lc dies in a trade or something.

I wouldn't be too quick to buy seperate shellholders based on anything I'd read.
All shellholders are not created equal. For instance, a different shellholder is listed for each of the 32WSpl, the 41RemMag, and the 356Win. I use one for all 3 cases. Same with 308W, 30-06, 257Roberts and 6.5x55. I use the same shellholder for each of these. I have two presses. One takes only old Herter's shelllholders and the other is an old Pacific retrofitted to accept RCBS shellholders. It's easier with the RCBS shellholders because they are so available. No so with the Herter's so I have to see what case will fit in what shellholder. Life still holds surprises and I'd be totally surprised if a 460 would not fit in at least some 45 Colt shellholders....maybe so.

I was loading for the .460, .454 and 45 Colt. I used the .460 for the .454 Casull. I was using a .460 die set to load the Casull and .45 Colt. Got to be a real pain switching lengths, etc. With the inexpensive price of Lee die sets, it was just a whole lot easier to buy a separate die set for each.

When I say won't fit, I'm talking about length.  It wouldn't feed all the way into the sizer die, and the bell/seat/crimp dies might not back out enough to make a longer OAL on the cartridge.  I also do not load for the .460, but do both the .454 and .45.  But do know that the .460 has some length on the .454, even though the bases should be the same.

I use a lee 45 colt shell-holder for the Colt but Win brass is tight but, my 303 brit shell-holder works fine for the win brass. Go figgure!
