7.62 x 39 barrels,,,,,
« on: April 18, 2008, 02:06:12 AM »
What are these barrels selling for? I'm guessing the factory [what's left of it] stopped making them a few years ago,,headspace/ammo problems, right?
Anyone dealing with one they bought and still enjoying it? Guess you could pull the bullets a bit and recriimp them [Lee Factory Crimp die] out to where they rest firm in the throat.
Interested in hearing what you do with your 7.62 x 39 barrel.
A second one is available at a shop nearby. It was fit by NEF to a single action sent in. They requested FIVE 7.62 x 39 barrels be fit to THAT action with the idea of selling them in their shop. Guess I'll take my SB2 action with me to see if mine fits ok.

Expect to pay between$100 and $150 for bbl. They are very accurate I have been shooting 123gr soft pt American Eagle ammo out of mine . I reload and have building up a supply of brass with this ammo while playing with it. This bbl shoots factory ammo as good as I would expect my handloads to do .Don't waste the $4 on the cheap stuff thinking you can make it work. It won't!! Been there done that as have others and even if you get a few to fire it is nasty dirty and inconsistent. Kurt

About two months ago, I got a 7.62x39 NEF from a guy on Gunbroker.   No special reason - I just wanted it.

Turns out that thing is stupid-accurate.   Or perhaps the rifle makes  *me*  stupid-accurate.   In any case, out of the box, I shot 20 shots into a 1.5" circle.   And, I'm 62.   AND, I just started shooting centerfire rifles.   The only other rifle that is as accurate for me is my NEF 30-30.

If fun, low-recoil (and accurate) shooting is your goal, get one.

Great little cast lead bullet slinger.

Tried a Lyman 311407 style slug with H4895 behind it.  3 of 5 were touching at 40 yrds.  Group was just under 1".  Velocity was 1880 fps.  Got some Lyman 311041 cast to try next.

AA1680 powder with a 150gr Speer .311 "Full gas checked" (jacketed for the unimaginative) worked great as well.

So far, haven't gotten the Lee TL160C bullet that was made for 7.62x39 to work very well.

Mine is one of my favorite rifles.  It shoots EXTREMELY well with my reloads, so-so with the Barnaul copper washed stuff.  I took one deer with it last year, bang-flop.  It shoots well with a 115 gr. .313 dia cast bullet and 4-5 gr. of unique.  Quiet and no recoil.

Not barnuals and not in a nef , but the wolf 154gr sp has proven to be a decent deer bullet in a sks

they are a great barrel and great caliber. I was lucky to get two when they first came out. The first I bought with the frame, the second was just a barrel. I kept one and the other got turned into a 303 British love them both.

I wonder what the chances are that a barrel will 'fit' my action? How often do you find 'odd barrels' found elsewhere that will fit another {SB2} action? I believe I can check the bolt contact area well enough, I guess the rest is visual [gap at breech]?
I'll read the FAQs to see.
BTW, I already have a very nice CZ Carbine in 7.62 x 39 and it's a real shooter, too. My longest range [135 yards] one shot kill of a deer was with a scoped SKS in same caliber, however I had good grade game bullets loaded.

what about S & B or Fiocchi brass cased ammo? will it shoot ok, and is it any accurate? If it shoots, probably get some just for the break-in & the brass.
