It clearly states on my permit that open carry is NOT ALLOWED.

you may want to read that permit again, it states "this does not permit you to carry openly as an officer".  the permit does not grant you that right, the Alabama State Laws do.  The permit is granting you the right to carry concealed, that's all.  It could just as easily state "this does not permit you to own a firearm" which would make as much sense.

I think open carry is perfectly legal in Alabama since there is no specific state law against it.
You should keep in mind that being legally right will not stop some local policeman or deputy
unfamiliar with the law from arresting you and confiscating your firearm. IMO get a permit and
carry concealed, your life will be less complicated.

I open carry in the woods while hunting.  Conseal it when I get back to my vehicle so as not to cause a problem in town.  I do think that in Alabama you can carry openly,  but like someone said, lots of young LEO's out there who do not know the laws.  We don't have to be fingerprinted either.

And it's almost time to renew my permit. Just send $16 to the sheriff's office, and a few days later my permit, laminated, is in my mailbox...

Alabama is great!

Man I wish Calhoun County would offer that option but I'd hate for them to go from $10 to $16 just to save me the trip. Now a couple bucks or so like on a tag would be fine but I'd still likely get it via mail even at an extra $6 just to avoid driving in Anniston.

Covington County permits were $10.00 and are now going up to $20.00 upon renewel. No complaints from me though, I would gladly pay $50.00 a year to carry and be legal if I knew the fees collected were going to combat drugs, thugs, and theives.

Mine was hand delivered this year. The lady at the SO mailed my oldest son's permit to me, so when I called her, she came to the house to hand retrieve his and brought mine. Golly, maybe I've become somebody...

WRONG! I used to have that here in Calhoun Co. It is not required any other county in the state honor it and no other state will. Lotsa states honor your state CCP. Don't misunderstand the value of that SO reserve card.

Not that I disbelieve you, GB, as that is what I was told second hand. I suppose it would be best for me to ask the Sheriff himself.. He should know...

You'd think he would but then many of our sherrifs aren't the sharpest tacks in the box.  :o

Back when I had one it stated right on it that it was not accepted out of state and wouldn't necessarily be in other counties than my own.

That's the way I understand it also. The permit is for concealed only. You can carry a firearm openly only if you're on your own land, place of business, or property that you are legal to be on, or any public thoroughfare in the state. Where the problem lays is once you get off any of those places or inside your vehicle, then you will need a concealed carry permit to cover being inside the vehicle or on someone's property that does not grant you the right to carry open. And then again a lot of law enforcement officers don't know all the state laws, so could give you a hassle and cause some problems. If you carry open in any of the places I mentioned, it would be wise to print off a copy of the state law on carrying a firearm and have it with you.
