Alabama Carry Permit information
« on: April 18, 2008, 02:50:05 AM »
Hey All:

Is there a site I can go to for the skinny on getting my Bama carry permit?

Let my Georgia one lapse since we are moving to the Lakeview area in May.

I appreciate your help!

In Alabama carry permits are handled by each individual County Sherrif's department. I'm not 100% certain if the fee is set at state or county level really. Here in Calhoun County the fee is $10 annually. The procedure is I believe the same in each county and I'm pretty sure so is the application form. You get it from the Sherriff of the county in which you will reside and fill it out. Within 30 days (usually less at least in my county) you'll get your notification of approval or rejection. Unless you have a criminal record you'll be approved.

Since the Sherriff gets all the proceeds from the permit fees to use as he sees fit in his department as an off budget income they are not inclined to turn down anyone unless you are a criminal.

I've had mine since the day after I turned 21 and am now 63 so as you can imagine I've been thru the process a few times over the years. It's simple, painless and as sure fire that you'll get one as in any state in the nation.

In Barbour County, after you get the first one, you can send in $15 and get it renewed through the mail. Prices are set county to county... I can have mine laminated for an extra dollar!

It's been so long since I've gotten my first one, I don't remember the procedure, other than the Sheriff will contact your employer (at least he did in my case), and any references that you put down.

Wow Tom you guys are getting cheated. We pay only $10 and lamination is automatic and free. But yup it sure enough varies a bit county to county on the finer details here.

In Lee County it is $25, and I was told they have issued over 30,000 permits for a population of about 125,000.  Quite a few carriers.  Auburn University has 25,000 students, so don't know if they are included in the population or not.

In Talladega County it is $20.00.It went up this past year;was $15.I remember back when I got my first ccw it was $10 and waiting period for a handgun 3 days. You had to pay for it first, then come back and pick it up.Here when you renew your permit,it usally takes about 2 weeks to get it.Of course if you have know the Sheriff you don't have to wait at all.I just go each Aug. when mine is about a week from lapsing.Takes about 5 mins. to get.......Rick

Boy I hope our county don't ever find out what's going on in all the others where you guys live. When I got my first permit back in March of 1966 when I turned 21 it took me all of five minutes and cost me $5. Today we have a third Sherriff as the one from those days retired was replaced by his son who got replaced by the current one.

All ya have to do is go to their office and in five minutes or less you're out the door with new permit laminated at no cost and all for a total cost of $10. They even send out notices each year to remind you it's time to drop by and get your new permit.

A few years ago we could get them at the sheriff's department in Clayton or Eufaula ( before our current Sheriff decided we didn't need an office in the largest city in the county!) At the exact time I was getting mine in Clayton, my son was getting his in Eufaula. It was printing a copy on the computer in Clayton. The lady issuing the permit was a tad confused.... Had to ask me if I was Tom or Michael...

Each March, renewal month and my birth month, when it's renewal time we get a card in the mail from the Sherriff's office reminding us it's time to come in and renew ours. Many times when we get there they already have them printed out and waiting for us. If not then they merely ask if our address and phone number have changed and if we still have the one handgun listed on it and when we say all is the same she hits the print button and the computer spits out our new permits which we then sign and they laminate and hand to us.

It's a quick and painless process. We're seldom in there more than ten minutes and I continue to be amazed each year when the price is still only $10 which is the only price increase in the 42 years I've been going down getting a permit. I think it rose to that level at least 20 years ago.

We get a card, and I think the last time we can actually renew in the mail or on line.  I know we can do our taxes, tags, and our hunting and fishing liscenses on line, and it prints out on your computer.

Oh we can too but somewhere along about 20 years or so ago they changed the form and wanted you to list one gun you have on it. It's not the only one you can carry by any means.

Yes it is. I love it here!

Mine doesn't have any particular firearm listed, it just says authorized to carry  concealed weapons on my person or in a vehicle....

With the exceptions of public buildings and places that sell or are serving alcohol.

I have been asked by my former pastor to come to church "dressed" after he got a call threatening  his wife and daughter...

Yes, Tuscaloosa County is $20.00 and you get a laminated card with your picture on it. You can fill out the application online on the County Sheriff's Dept. website. After filling it out, you have to wait about 7 days for the background check, then you can swing by their office behind the Court House. After the first time, you can renew it by mail or by going to the office.

I heard once that Jefferson County was only $5.00 for for a permit. I guess they know you REALLY need one there!

Hey Mitch,

Me and the Mrs. went in on a day when we were getting new tags, etc. at and near the courthouse.  Came back 8 days later; hers was ready and they had mine making calls and a bunch of paperwork with it (Uh oh - My Past catcing up to me???); my assumption was since I am a "Converted Southerner" from Maryland (we started the war in Baltimore before Ft. Sumpter - I'll have you know!)...  I also do some gun swap'n & sell'n...  They did give me the permit but I was getting some looks ( :o)...

Yup, you need a permit in Jeff. County and they should charge more than $5.00 since they are having some budget issues already!!!

Just a quick note on AL permits.
There is an Attorney General Opinion that the permit is not restricted to a certain pistol but you may not carry more than one pistol at a time.
Silly, but it is out there.

http://www.ago.alabama.gov/oldopinions/8100044.pdf

Another thing, You don't need to have a permit to open carry BUT when you get into a car with it on it is considered concealed and you need a permit.

I think "open carry" is not allowed.  I was told by two different sheriff departments that if you have a handgun you should have a permit.  Only time you are not required is on the day of purchase.  After that, you need the permit.

I was told you do not have to have a CC permit if you open carry while hunting.  When returning to vehicle, unload and lock it up.  My SIL was a deputy and he said, there is not really an Alabama law against open carry, but is wasn't advisable.  Law only related to concealed carry.

Open carry is not illegal, but most LE either don't know it or don't want to know it. It's always best to spend a few extra $$$ and get the permit.
I read that someone in this state had a pistol on his hip and went into a Wal-Mart and was taken to jail because the LE said that he couldn't wear openly. The State AG's ruling is contrary to what the LE said, and I believe the arrested man has a copy of the ruling...

My permit does NOT say that open carry is not allowed.  It only says concealed carry on person or in vehicle.  Neither my old paper permit or my new photo plastic permit says open carry is not allowed.  Wareagleguy what county did you get your permit in?  I got mine in Lee county.

I think we have found the problems with not knowing the laws.  There is no state wide mandate on these issues.  Each county is "controlled" by the sheriff and issues permits as he/she allows.

A pistol permit should be a state issue.

I live in Franklin County by the way.

Synopsis: PERMIT NOT REQUIRED--PERSON AFOOT CARRIES UNCONCEALED PISTOL; Description: A PERMIT IS NOT REQUIRED WHEN A PERSON AFOOT CARRIES AN UNCONCEALED PISTOL.; Origin: BUTLER COUNTY; Keywords: FIREARMS, PISTOL PERMITS, LAW ENFORCEMENT; Requestor: GHOLSTON VAN .....

Look in the opinion search.

Maybe one of you that that are a bit better with the 'puter can post it so it will work better.

BTW, I have the same permit that wareagleguy has, but mine was issued in Barbour County. It does indeed say that it does not allow for open carry, but as the permit is for concealed carry, I do believe that it needs revising, especially in light of the AG ruling ( or opinion, whichever....)

Took some scratching but I think this is the correct link to the actual opinion. It's a really old one from 1984 and might or might not still be considered valid. Such opinions are NOT law and are merely interpretations of law by the AG. One as old as this might or might not help you today.
