Well first of all I can't wait to get back out and get shooting my 1895G this weekend, and secondly if any of you guy's ever go on vacation remember your log on and password.  I tried to log on from a another computer that the ISP was not known which created a host of other problems.  GB had to contact Tim, and well it just created a host of problems for me to log on.  Then my wifes lap top didn't want to work wireless, and the net cafe's are a real pain as well.  Bottom line write your password and log on down and remember to take them with you.

Now, onto talking about lever guns and our Marlins.

I have been reading about some guy's feeling a real lot of recoil from their 1895 and or 1895G's with heavy loads.  I don't know if it's me or my recoil pad, but I have shot everything from 300 JHP's to my 500-gr Elk Busters with no ill effects to my right shoulder.  I got to say that its been a real pleasure to shoot unlike my uncles .338 Win Mag, and just don't know if it's that I been shooting this blasted cartridge too long to notice or not as it is my most favorite cartridge.

   Funny you should mention low recoil. I recently acquired and started shooting an 1895 standard model. Granted I bought the low end cartridges, but was very underwhelmed. My Tikka T3 lite in .300 wm feels MUCH worse, the Marlin in 45/70 is a pleasure to shoot.
   I'm going to get some bear hunting fodder for it soon maybe they will get my attention. Are the cowboy action loads, 405g rn lead lighter than standard load?  How would a whitetail respond to that load? I ask only because my daughter shoots these very nicely and I see no need to look for a .243 "lady's" gun since range isn't an issue in woods.
   I am enjoying this dandy rifle, and can see the Tikka resting a little this fall. If that big slug kills like I here, and don't beat me up... who knows, might get me some woolens and LL bean boots and go retro.

The cowboy loads actually will have plenty of knock down but slow fps like the around 1,100 fps, with 1,088 ft lbs of energy which has plenty of thump to take them down with.  They should still fully penetrate even at 100 yards, just remember to keep your shooting with in your known shooting distance.  Personally I would use the Remington 405-gr JSP which has softer lead in the center for a much better re-action if you know what I mean. 

Either of these are a real sweetheart loads to shoot, and no destructive meat damage or blood shot to even worry about.

That Remington round gets a lot of press here, is it a go to round for anything covered in fur or more of a deer round that's passable for Elk and large Blackies. I don't reload and am looking for the 180g Nosler Partition performance I get from the .300 w. m.  What I'm trying to say is one round that is good for 'bout anything that needs shot.  With all of the different loads out there it seems the 45/70 can be tailored to each job. If there is one Whitetail, Wapiti, Blackbear cartridge to simplify sighting in that's the one I want, all that for $0.50 a round!!! can you help a brother out?

The 405-gr Remington is a go to round for even Elk and Black Bear.  Black Bear are not all that hard to kill in the first place, and a proper shot on an Elk (now there's a can of worms) meaning heart lung shot and not in the shoulder will also go down with no problem.  I can't refer any of the expensive factory cartridges available because I'm a reloader and haven't purchased a box of factory ammo in a very long time, since reloading cuts way down on expenses.

Thanks for the reply. I just got this rifle and the more I study it the better I like it. Is it fair to compare hard cast to muzzle loader experiences. I'm sure the extra weight enhances penetration, is there any expansion or just a half inch hole. I don't hear much complaining about losing game to the 45/70, so maybe I'll just quit worrying. So much talk of different reloads gets me thinking to much. It took me three years to decide the .300 with Partitions will make things as dead as they were going to get, and stop looking at magazine articles about new wonder bullets that are the cure to a problem that doesn't exist, for me any way.

Here are my loads that I use in my 1895G, and these are not as stout as they could be, simply because I like it mild, NOT wild.  With the 45-70 it just doesn't have to be that way.

1.) 300-gr JHP Hornady bullet
2.) 405-gr JSP Remington bullet
3.) 405-gr FP  Shooters Choice bullet
4.) 500-gr SHC Elk Buster

My Marlin 1895G loves all of these, and each has it's own intended purpose.  The 500-gr Elk Buster will shoot end to end on bison and bust both shoulders of a very large bull elk.

All my loads average approx 1550 fps.
