22 mag or 17HMR ?
« on: April 19, 2008, 01:20:47 AM »
I am wanting to get a new barrel to go with the .17M2 I have. Question is which one. I know the popular answer is BOTH!!! and eventually I probably will have both, but for now , just one.
From this vast pool of knowledge I know there are many good ideas. Please share them with me.
Any advice or help will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks, Robert

P.S. I will only be killing paper with these.

22 mag.
Why? I don't know. That's what I have, but I don't think H&R is making the 22mag Ultra any longer. There are still some out there, though.

Maybe a little more selection in ammo, maybe a little cheaper ammo.  Both are fine rounds.

Besides, you'll just end up getting BOTH eventually. ;D

well your talking about 3 different rounds  there 22mag , 17 hmr and the 17m2, they m2 is a hot shot 22cal, just depends on what your goin to do with it? if its a plinker  for cans and trash monsters, go 22lr, if its a varmint rifle you would probobly go best with the 17hmr or 22mag, id go 22mag for any varmints with size, ive owned both the 22mag an 17hmr, both work great on the right application ,

I gotta agree. the Hummer and the WMR are too expensive to be used for killing paper. 22lr or the HM2 would be better choices. the ammo is about the same cost especially if you order the HM2 in bulk.

For just paper, I'd stay with the 22 lr.  I also have the 22 mag that I love, so that would be my choice out of the 2 you suggested.  Around here the 22 mag is cheaper than the 17 and, with the wind, the 22 cal. seems to have less drift.  Oh hell, get all of them!   DP.

I have a marlin model 57 in 22mag. , that i like and havn't shot in years don't no why. I have bull barrel sporter in 17hmr, less noise, does a great job on fearl house cats (don't tell peta) havn't tried it
on any thing bigger(probably it's limit) the 22 mag has killed lots of coons and turkeys and 2 bobcats, now i shoot the 17hmr then jump to the 204, really love that 204.

Do you hand load? If so get a .22 hornet or .223, You can shoot both cheaper than the rimfires, and load them up or down to match what you want If not I prefer the .22mag they don't blow things up as bad as the HMR.

Except the hornet will not fit or work on his rimfire frame.

22 Mag    Since you already have a .17 that works for small stuff and paper, I'd go with something I could kill a coyote or fat groundhog with.

What Is A Veteran?
A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

Thanks guys for all the info. Looks like 22 mag is the popular choice here. That was my first choice also, but I needed help from everyone to let me know if my thoughts were going in the right direction.
Guess I will be looking for that 22 mag barrel after all.
Thanks, Robert

The HM2 and HMR are going to do pretty much the same thing on the paper inside 100yds....so getting the hummer is a waste, IMHO. Go for the Wummer (WMR) for something a bit different.

IMHO, the WMR is the superior hunting round as well...if you ever venture into it. The small .17 pills are great on little critter, but more mass and larger diameter is a good thing for the larger varmints.

If your only shooting paper don't you want accuracy first? and if you do then I would think the 17hmr is the better option.

None of the 22mags I have shot have come close to my 917v
