Which rifle to get?
« on: April 19, 2008, 07:49:14 AM »
Marlin 1894 in 44mag, Model 1894C in 357mag, or Marlin 336c in 35 Rem? I have been looking at these models and I have decided to get one. I am looking leaving open sites on the gun or a small red dot site for short range deer hunting or just plinking with 38special rounds in the 357. What do yall suggest?

One of each would be nice.  But IMHO if you want to plink with it get the .357, Its one of my favorite rifles. I killed everything from tin cans to whitetail with mine.
Bustin dirt clods and ventilating cans is good fun shootin light cast loads out of it and the 180s are deer hammers out to bout 150 yards.

I vote for the 44 magnum.  The 357 is a great rifle, I just like the 44.  But then I cast my own bullets.  If you do not cast, and you want to shoot a lot then I might consider the 357, but only if I did not reload.  Tom.

Well I have decided to not go with the 1895 in 45-70. I already have 2 and I don't have either of the other 3. I have been looking at these more lately with the mess going on with Rem and I have decided to get once before something happens. I don't cast but I am slowly working my way into reloading but I have a bunch of 38special on hand so I might just burn up some of it if I get the 357.

You could always save the money on a new rifle and load light bullets in the 45-70.  Western bullet company sells a 150 gr. collar button bullet for $9.00 a 100.  That's sized and lubed.  They provide loading data for the bullet also.  These gallery bullets were very popular in the old days.  Now I am dating myself.  But then again it is always fun to get a new rifle.

Because of the versatility and use you can get from it I think the 1894C in .357 might just be my next Marlin. If I didn't just buy an older 336 in .35 Rem I might just have to buy this 1894 SS Limited on GunBroker. One sweet rifle.

.30-06, your spread of possibles leaves me to think you have no idea what you want a Marlin lever action FOR. A .357 and .450 Marlin are worlds apart. First you need to decide the use, then you can narrow the field of choices.

I don't really have a use for either. I don't really need more and if I were just to have the guns I need I would have about 6 guns and not what I have.

NEVER just have what you need! ;)  Right now I have an 1894 in 357, and a 336 in 35 Rem.  shoot them both alot, but the 357 more than the others.  Just brought home a 336 30-30 made the same year I was born, 1952. ;D  It's a little rough cosmetically but then so am I. >:(.  The 35 is a 1957 and both are way smoother than any made within the last thirty years that I've played with.  My 38-55 CB isn't to bad but the older triggers are lighter and smoother.  Now I have to see how smooth I am when I tell mama another member of the family got adopted! ;D ;D  DP.

i like pistol caliber lever guns but if i could only have one it would be the .35. there about the most versitlile levergun made. You can load them up enough to kill about any animal and loade them down with 357 cast pistol bullets and there like shooting a 22.

.30-06 then I suggest the .357. You can shoot the daylights out of it and not beat yourself up. You will smooth the action and YOUR lever gun technique.  Then if you want a bigger Marlin to hunt large things with teeth or horns you will be all set.

Thanks yall. I don't have a lever action in a pistol caliber but I have them in rifle calibers. That's pretty much why I leaned to the 357.

I'm a huge fan of the 35 for animals larger than deer.  But ammo is nearly $2. per shot these days!

Deer sized animals are quickly dispatched with the ancient 30-30.  Ammo is still affordable, too.   This buck fell to single 30-30 bullet at 150 yards or so.

I think you'll shoot 357 the most because of light recoil and low cost ammo.   Whether its enough gun for shots beyond 75 yards or so is subject to much discussion.
