I'm curious. What was your first catch as a trapper?  Mine was a grinning possum. I had went a week or two with nothing. I knew nothing about scent control, trap placement or different sets. I had a trap set in a creek, covered with leaves, and baited with a dead bird. That was a possum waiting to happen. It did encourage me, and a week later I took my first coyote in a snare. After that I was wipped. I have been trapping for 1 1/2 seasons now and I have caught 6 coyotes, 1 red fox, 2 beavers, 1 rat, many coons, many grinners, and 2 skunks. I also caught my finger several times. HA!

This season I plan to atleast double my catch and try for my first mink, grey fox, and bobcat. Hey, I can dream can't I!

What was your first catch?

On my brothers line he let me set one set. I cought a "Jumbo" coon that 1st night... boy was he mad! I got $48 for that one.

I was hooked, and still hooked. Even though the prices of fur have dropped slightly since then.

Hey "KYtrapper16", Good luck with that first Mink!

hey craig   sounds like ya need a good trappin book
i would recomend trapline 2000 its by hal sullivan, he has a web site where ya can purchase it  its a book about using
all ther different equip. made today how to adjust and
take care of traps how to basic sets for most furbearers. on top of this page is a ad for bogmasters trap supplies ive brought traps from him and is a top notch supplier of traps and supplys. plus ya might want to join your state trappers assoc. they can help in where to market furs
texas fur is not consider high quality but it does sell. you also need to know your states laws and limits, that applies to trapping.
   hope this helps
Mike

Ky, my first catches of furbeares were a double on muskrats>I had set a #1 longspring at 2 den entrances that were 2 feet apart. At that time my footwear was a pair of knee boots.I could make it to my sets without getting wet ,if I was careful. That day I was wet up to my waist. After that I placed large plastic bags in my boots ,so I could set traps in water that was a bit deeper.
I have been afflicted with water fever ever since, and I know for sure there is no cure.  Tom

Actually it was the rubbish removal man, we had coons getting into the garbage every night. I was about 15 (Now 48)So i set a small  round trap i got from someone next to the barrel. I caught the guy by the heel of his work boot. I think it was probably a small victor coil spring. I often laugh at that experience.. It was many years after that  before i actually got into trapping. But the seed was planted and it grows bigger every year.
