Is the felt recoil of stout .44 magnum loads less severe in an Encore 12-inch (no scope) than it is in a Contender 10 inch? I used to have the latter and it was a vicious little blankety-blank if I say so, myself. I'm thinking that the extra half-pound will make the Encore much more user-friendly in this caliber. Or am I mistaken?

Blunderbus - thanks for the chuckle! The first Contender I bought came with two barrels - a 10" .357 and an 8" .44 mag. I think I shot a total of 10 rounds through the 44 before I sold it. Very, very uncomfortable to shoot. The abuse my thumb took from that gun was just incredible. So, I feel your pain.

Those were the days! I loved the way those classic Herrett stocks looked. And I liked the way they felt -- until I squeezed the trigger! Fortunately, I later discovered that all .44 magnum handguns were not equally loathsome to shoot.

I guess the .44 mag is pretty moderate when compared to some of the Encore barrels I've seen guys on this board refer to. But it seems to me like one of the "essentials" that I ought to have.

also got one of the 357 44 combos both with hotshot bbls, shoot 44 spl out of the mag bbl and no longer cuss in streams that offend for miles around.
