Morning Hunt
« on: April 21, 2008, 02:59:55 PM »
I caught the boar crossing a trail about 35 yards ahead of me at a run. After I shot him there must have been 20 more come out of the woods. I didn't have a scale but I would say he was around 200lbs. The pistol is a Taurus Raging bull in 44mag.

Where are you hunting at??? Here in the south it has already gotten too hot to hunt hogs...You can still kill them but i don't like trying to clean them and keep the meat from spoiling in this heat....

The bullet was a 240gr xtp, the powder was h110. The hit was in the neck. It pretty much stopped him in his tracks. Im in central Texas (Caldwell) on 60 acres of land and the hogs are just destroying the fields. There must have been 20 or 30 more that ran when I shot him.

We tend to shoot them for the same reason sometimes....They can be a nuisance when their numbers get high....They can really mess up a piece of land....

I don't see an exit wound. Is there one?

The bullet didn't pass all the way through. The load is not a hot load kinda a mid load. From the angle I shot him at I would say the bullet was stopped buy the shoulder blade on the exit side. But either way he was DRT.

Do you perceive this to be an issue and you want to resolve it going-forward or is the lack of an exit wound acceptable?

Good question Cabin4. My feelings if it is a neck shot I wouldn't need an exit wound, but a lung shot I would want one. But I've seen a lot of different calibers and loads that don't exit a stout hog on a broadside shot. One good attribute of a hog is their neck at it's base is roughly the same size as the heart/lung area so it makes a favorable target. I once killed a deer incidently during refilling a feeder with the standard pressure 38 Special with 110 gr SJHP, Remington at about 10yds. Bullet did not exit and did not leave a drop of blood but at that distance a lung hit is easy. Deer ran about 75yds, but I would feel better with an exit hole if I am able, but certainly not required.

Not really to worried about it coming out the other side. Like mohawk said I to have seen a lot of different guns not do a pass thru shot. But like I said I almost sure from the angle the bullet is under the right shoulder blade. And in the event the he did run there was more than enough blood coming out to make an easy track. I just drug him out of it to make the picture look better.

Seen some pass throughs that bled so little they may as well not exited.

Most of you guys are probably to young to remember this.  A majority of the gun scribes at one time said a bullet should not exit the body.  The bullet should expend all of it's energy inside the animal.  I even went along with that theory for awhile.  I finally decided there wasn't any such thing as overkill! :)

I would like to make one thing very clear!  Hmmmmm wasn't that what Nixon said?  Anyway, it doesn't really take all that much to kill a critter if the bullet is put in the right place.  I occasionally use a 22-250 on hogs with great success.  I don't think I've ever had a pass through with the 70 grain Speer bullet I use in my handloads.  I've never needed a second shot with that load.

I agree, Ironwood. Even, for instance, if  a deer sustained a .32 Auto ball through both lungs. It will not go far. The animal will run full speed, which helps your cause due to this pushing more blood into the area, and will collapse due to blood loss internally. Of course this in not recommended but it is a physiological fact.

I agree as well when it comes to deer. If you put the bullet in the boiler room they won't go far. Just wanted to see what the thoughts on this are. When it comes to hogs, the are really strong built animals. It difficult to get a bullet exit these when they get in that 200ish pound and up weight.

Here is a picture of the hog before I moved him. As you can see a neck shot will leave a good blood trail. It was a short track I would say about three feet from where I shot him.
