RUGER SINGLE ACTION TRIGGER/HAMMER PIN REMOVAL

What is the trick to getting the smaller of the two pins out that hold the hammer - trigger in ?
 
The big one pushed right out the smaller one won't budge !
I let it sit with kroil on it and tried to remove it from both sides with a drft punch and progressively bigger hammers .
 
Part #XRO3400 on  the factory ruger parts diagram...Do they come out right to left or left to right ?

 I didn't have any problems removing mine with a drift punch and my hand. Mine was new so maybe that was the difference.

  Going my memory here but is that the cross pin that requires you to remove the right rear bottom grip frame screw?  That screw acts as a retaining screw as well as holding the grip frame on.

i tried to remove mine last night with the same results. i know i had it out of there before
and i was able to punch it with a punch and it came out. the only thing i can think of,
is to release tension on the hammer cam and possibly take trigger spring off of posts.
i am going to revisit my manual first. dan

The trigger pin is held in by the heavy, funny 'U' shaped spring that puts the tension on the loading gate.  After you get the grip frame off you can depress it with a screwdriver to get the pin to slide out.  Putting it back is harder, and easier if you have three hands or some help.  It's quite hard to hold the spring down with one hand and line up the pin and the trigger with the other two hands, then slide it all together.  They make a clamp specifically to hold that spring down for you.  Not owning one, I usually try to get a screwdriver just right holding the spring, then lean on that with my chest to hold it and use both hands to put the pin and trigger back in.  If the screwdriver slips, you start over.  And if you get it all back together and the gun doesn't work right, you don't have the end of the spring that presses against the loading gate quite in all the way.  Re-do it and you will be fine.  It's not as intimidating as it sounds, just is easier with an extra hand.  I usually get everything in place, then ask my wife to come and slide the pin back in.  Her usual response is 'you took it apart, you fix it.'   44 Man

No trick to the hammer pin.  There is a long grip frame screw on one side on the bottom of the grip frame behind the trigger guard.  That screw holds fits in a notch in the hammer pin and holds it in.  When you put it back, you can put it either way, just put the long screw in the same side as the notch.  I usually put it back in toward the left side of the gun as I usually lay it on it's right side to work on it.  44 Man.

Geez 44 Man, it sounds like you been watching me do this.....I even get a sore spot in my sternum from the screw driver handle.  I did find it easier to put the pin back in from the side of the frame opposite the spring.  This way the pin is about half way thru the frame and all lined up when I push on the pin.  Even if the pin only goes in part way, it will hold the spring out of the way until you pop the pin the rest of the way in.  I made a quick sketch.  Pin is black.  Screw driver pushes the spring up and out of the slot in the pin.

I hear you about the sore spot on your sternum, I've had that!  Yes, I forgot to mention that good advice about putting the pin part way in through the trigger before you depress the spring.  Thanks! 
If someone still has questions about this, I will tear down one of my Rugers and take some photo's for you guys.  I won't be back to work for another month anyway so I'll have time, but I think most of you can see how it works once you get the grip frame off.

That must be why I don't own one of those clamps, $25 is a little hefty unless you are using it a LOT!  I'd pay $12 or maybe $15 for one but not any more.  A gunsmith needs one and must pay the price but for us handymen, I can get by.  Maybe my old SKS sight pusher tool would work, I'll have to try it and see sometime.  44 Man

A small "C" clamp works fine. Grind the foot off the screw and use the tip of the screw end to put pressure on the spring. The screw end needs to be shaped to hold down the spring but once you perfect it, you'll sleep with it under your pillow to guard it.
