Mossberg 500 or Rem 870?
« on: April 23, 2008, 01:47:26 PM »
I have been thinking of buying a Mossberg 500 or a Rem 870 20ga and putting a cantilever scoped barrel on it for hogs. Do both have about the same accuracy/trigger? I can get a Mossberg for a good bit less than the Remington is why I asked.

Pick one, they are both reliable and accuracy will be good from either if you find the right slug.  Trigger can be re-worked on them.  The barrel can be pinned on both.

I vote for the 500. While I have had both the 500 is more forgiving. easy barrel swap, and shoots clean or dirty. I have two one is the cammo turkey gun and the other I purchased as a combo gun. the combo gun has approx, 15,000 rounds through it and it is still shooting.

I'd take the remington myself, but I had a bad experience with a mossberg shotgun and am kind of biased.

I take the Mossberg 500.  With it and a handful of Dixie Slugs, I do not hesitate to hunt anything in North America, native or exotic.

You should look at the Ithaca 37, I have had an eye on them for some time.  If I were to go pump that bottom eject would be a big selling point for me.

The BPS is way too lite and kicks like a mule! The 870 & Ithaca are the way to go for slug guns.

The 500 is a great gun, and I like the thumb-operated safety.  But I have seen the plactic safeys broken off, making the gun unsafe to use until repaired.  I don't know if Mossberg has metal safetys, but they should.  I vote for the 870.  It is more solid, and doesn't rattle like a pea in a tin can.

I like the 870 better .
most 500's feel less refined , then maybe that's why they cost less .

Can't go wrong with either, though I own more 870s. I do like Mossberg's tang safety, but they are not very durable. I've never had much trouble flicking the Remmy's safety off on moving deer. Look around, and you will find that they are both affordable, and will take a beating.
