super 14 sights question
« on: April 23, 2008, 03:10:08 PM »
This past weekend Dad and I loaded up some test rounds to try in my new 357 herrett super 14 barrel.

I took it to out back to the range got everything set up and started to fire my first round and I noticed something funny about my sight picture.

The first thing was that there was almost twice as much daylight on each side of my front sight as I like.  I could almost fit two front blade widths in the back blade sight slot.  To make it worse the front sight blade was slightly bent I could see it curve to the left a bit.

I suspect that someone put a set of sights from a 10" barrel on there by mistake causing the extra gap in the sight picture.  Where can I get a new set of sight blades?  I prefer a sight picture that only has a few thousandths light gap on each side for both target and hunting.

I am hoping to deer hunt with this in the fall and maybe some local Ferrel hogs early summer so I am not considering a scope. I only hunt with sights (with the exception of long range varmints and squirrels).

I would like to get this up and running soon so I have the summer to get real familiar with it.

Any guidance or heads up on a supplier of sights will be greatly appreciated.

Ray,
What are the width of the front sight and the width of the notch in the rear sight?  That info might help us figure out what you're looking at and how to fix it.

It also makes a huge difference if you are shooting off a bench with the gun up close vs in prone or some other position where the gun is at arms length.  Low light conditions in a hunting situation and you wish you had a little gap on either side of the blade.

The front sight is .070"  the gap in the rear sight is .105"

I don't like no gap I do like a little but a little.

Holding this off hand at my normal arms length sighting at a target I can count almost three of the front sight widths in the sight picture.  That is way too much for anyone I would think.

It has been suggested that I go ahead and replace the bent front sight and try try a ghost ring set up on the rear sight since I plan to use this primarily for hunting.

I am considering that but I have no experience with the ghost rings and I don't know if I would like it.

Rear notch should be .076...Sounds like somebody filed it open...
