High energy or light magnum loads
« on: April 23, 2008, 05:39:56 PM »
Anybody ever crack one of these open and see what's inside?  It makes me wonder after both companies are so adamant about no one trying to duplicate their loading procedures.

Makes me wonder about when I was thinking of mixing H414 and RL-22... I think I'm glad I never tried that...

For the average handloader --- NEVER - NEVER MIX POWDERS !!!!!!!!!!! While in some very rare cases this was used for VERY LARGE big game rounds the practice is a NO NO for most .

As for factory ammo , they use a blended powder that their lab has done a ton of testing on and that powder is not available to the handloader .

Yep, They'll tell ya that it's a propritary(how much ya'll wanta bet I didn't spell that right ?) powder blend and you shouldn't even think about trying to duplicate the velocies. I've not tried any of them, but have heard of others having good luck with them.

As for mixing powders, DON"T! Occassionally, I'll dump that last tablespoon of powder into a fresh pound can and give it a good shake to mix it in well. ACCORDING TO THE POWDER COMPANIES, THIS IS A BAD PRACTICE ALSO !!!!

I talked with someone at a gun show who took apart a Hornady Light Magnum load, and he said there were 3 powders in there, and he couldn't get it all back in.  Didn't know how they got it in there.

Some excellent advice here. DON'T MIX POWDERS! DON'T MAKE DUPLEX LOADS! YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT THE H**L YOU ARE GETTING!

Breaking down factory ammo doesn't tell you anything. When powder is manufactured there are some variables that can't be removed. They may be trying to make a batch of some particular canister powder but when the batch of powder is tested it is out of spec for the intended canister number. Sometimes they are close, but not close enough to trust it to be used with their published canister data. They then sell that batch of powder to some ammo manufacturer who tests it further and comes up with a load that is safe FOR THAT BATCH. They sell that ammo without telling you what is in it. If the next batch comes up within the parameters of the desired canister powder, they label it as such and put it in containers and sell it to us handloaders.
