My first and only bear was a 171lb sow. Black bear in Maine.

That hopefully will all change this year as I make my second adventure to Maine for the record book blackie !

Biggest I shot wasn't truly mine, it was sort of shared with my buddy.

We stalked within 30 yards of him, and fired at the same time, he with his .303, me with my 7mm. After 7 shots, he was done for. :eek: He was probably 350 lbs., didn't measure his hide, but his skull goes a little over 18", and I have a shoulder mount of him on my wall.

My biggest Black square's at about seven feet but it's skull only went 19 3/8. Didn't get the chance to weigh it. In the area's on Vancouver where I am fortunate to hunt, 19" bears are not all that unusual. I've seen a few real monsters, one particular one I remember we passed up because he was bald from the waist back. Friends wife got one last year I believe went 20 1/2".

400 pounds, at about 17-18 yards, with my S&W 57, 6"bbl., .41 Magnum.

This bear was treed, in Peppermint Creek Canyon, Tulare County, Calif.

My biggest was a big male taken in Modoc County, Calif. in 1992. Butter ball fat at 511 lbs., but with a skull that only went 18 7/8". Yeah, I know a pin head. Took him at just over 200 yards with a .270 Weatherby Magnum using 150 gr. Partitions. Lawdog

My first and only bear taken on 9-15-01, 235lb 10yr old sow in the western U.P., taken with a Ruger Bisley 45colt 325gr cast handload. Skull measured 16 1/4 :? Will try for something bigger next time I am up there. :wink:

I've shot many black bears. In 2004 I got the largest Spring bearkilled by a Mloa client. It sq. 7" 4"(unstreacked) weighed 536lbs(on a scale) B&C 21 6/16
I have seen many larger ones,just haven't closed the deal on one yet. I've hunted one in MB for four years that everyone agrees will hit 650 + got him on video tape(does that coun't ) Will try again next spring.

Back in 1994 I harvested a 300 pound chocolate bear in Minnesota that was 6'4" long and the skull measured at 18 5/16

I was able to arrow him at 20 yards and he went about 70 yards.

ONLY black bear I ever shot was a 500 lb ,in New Foundland in June 2001,
w/a Knight 50 cal disc rifle,80 gr FFF 777 & a Hawk .429 dia -375 gr bullet & havester sabot.Bear went about 25/35 yards. Double lung shot, bullet expanded to about 1.50". Great hunt ! 20 7/8" skull & the rug squares to about 6'

500 pound, 18 15/16" skull. Contender pistol in 30/30. Bear was 19 1/2 years old.

I have shot lots of bears over the years and I don't know the weight of the largest bear that I've shot but it measured 6'4" nose to tail.

Skull was just onder 20 inches, weighed 380 lbs with out the guts.

I think the biggest blackbear that was takin was a 750 or 800lb blackbear that was taken out of season down south somewhere if i remember correctly it was a few years ago. I believe the guy was caught when he went to get the rug done at a taxidermy shop. I know he was arrested.

I think there are some record sized black bears still out there but there smart they didn't get that big because their stupid. I have seen some pretty big tracks from them.

I worked for an engineering group you know PHD's one asked me about bear hunting once and he asked when you shoot one how do you get it to the car? I told him you run up to it and kick it in the @ss and make him chase you to the car and shoot him there. The look on his face was awesome i shocked him and after a few minutes of thinking he realized i was pulling his leg. But it sounded good and I really laid it on thick. I had all of us hunters there laughing.

I read in the NY outdoor news that last year PA residents took more then 50 bears over the 500 pound mark and last years biggest in PA was 834 pounds , i beleive the hunter was 17 years old.

Howdy all, am new here and found the urge to reply to this...

Took my first bear last year at the age of 14, smaller-sized sow weighing in about 150-175, never actually weighed her.

15 this year, have a young Plott pup I'm in the process of learning how to train...(God Help me with this one) Also plan on taking another bear out of a tree this year...Was supposed to go today but it poured here in Maine all day...Put a damper on my day, so to speak...

To the one who wants the Maine record, have fun...Biggest taken here was hug,e, I can't be sure on the weight, but to my knowledge it was over 500, possibly almost 600 lbs. Only reason I know this is I hunt with the guy whose dogs treed it.

Arrowed my first bear a couple weeks ago in canada. We had to skin and gut the animals in camp to cool them so we never got a weight, but according to girth and length measurements my boar was 375-400lbs.

i have not killed 1 ..yet...but i have to respond to the big bear killed down south.....this is problay the 880 lb bear killed in nc.....this was a legal kill.....this bear was weighed on scales as was the 720 lb nc bear....nc bioligist weigh most of the big bears,......the only thing out of the ordinary about this kill is the bear was supposedly feeding on hogs being dumped by a hog farmer.....nc is the biggest producer of hogs(unfortunatly) and when 1 dies of disease or natural causes sometimes the farmer dumps the hog......supposed to be buried in the landfill.....nc has produced many over 600 lbs though not many record book heads ...jim zumbo...tom miranda and others have all said if you want to kill a heavy weight bear go to eastern nc.........mack in nc

Last years: 7'4" squared with the bow.

This years: 7' squared with the bow. This one is going to be a shoulder mount as he had a lot of charcter. Big scratch down his muzzle and a rip in his ear. And, he had a pretty good twin over on the Alaskan Forum under....AK Hunt of a Lifetime.

Mine was 7' square, with a 19 15/16" scull, then I shot a 6' 10" square, with a 19" scull the next day out of a tree.... (was in a 3 bear a year area) both made beautiful rugs...

i helped skin a 465 bear 2 weeks ago a friend killed
2 years ago we had alot of big bears killed here in virginia
i know of 33 bears killed within 4 miles of my house the biggest was 700lbs, there were 3 over 600lbs ,a couple around 500lbs and a bunch 300-400.

I heard the same thing about that big Carolina bear feeding on hogs...Only part I didn't hear was that it was taken illegally.

to the last post......d mans post is the only time i have ever heard about the nc 880 lb black bear being illegal...i will repeat that it was not an illegal kill........it was a legal kill..........
