national match
« on: April 25, 2008, 04:50:48 PM »
I just received a 1911 that I got from a gunsamerica vendor. It is a mk iv gold cup. It was advertised as a national match but it says trophy on the slide. It does have the nm on the barrel. Is there any way I can tell by the serial  number what it is. If I call colt customer service could they tell me? Did colt just rework trophy models and sell them as national match? All the paperwork says national match on it. I'd appreciate any info you can give me.

I believe the Series 70s and Series 80s Gold Cups had serial numbers beginning with 70G or 80G - the G indicating Gold Cup.

The 'nm' you find on the barrel is something I have seen often but do not know if it refers to 'national match' or not.  HTH.  Mikey.

The serial number is gct09xxx. I'm pretty sure it is gold cup trophy. My problem is, how do I verify that it is a national match. Or does it really matter. I know the national match is more of a custom shop gun with hand fitted slide and parts. It feels tight and the trigger breaks like glass at right around 4 pounds. I haven't shot it yet so I guess I'll see what it does at the range.

The case it came in is serial numbered to match the gun and it reads gold cup trophy but no mention anywhere of national match. I don't know much about colts so I'm curious. This gun was advertised as a national match and I traded with the guy for it under the assumption that it was a custom shop gun.

Honestly, does it matter? Maybe I'm making a big deal out of nothing.

Jim - Somehow I have the idea that the National match pistols came before the Gold Cup series.  I think they both carried the Elliason rear sight but I really don't think there were any major differences.  There must be some significance to the 'Trophy' designation for that Gold Cup but I don't know what it is.  Maybe some of the other guys know the specifics.  You can always call Colt and see what they have to say about it.

Whatever the correct designation or meaning, it is top of the line Colt and I hope you enjoy it.  Mikey.

I just found this board today. I have not been able to shoot in over a year. I am disabled with a broken back.

Sorry to hear about the back. I guess you're still interested in shooting and firearms. You've come to the right place. There are a lot of good people here and there's a wealth of information to be had. I settled here after trying other outdoor sites. Mostly a bunch of guys telling boob jokes and messing around. This is a great site, welcome.

The original Gold Cups were only so marked on the box and the guns were only marked National Match. The series 70 & 80 Gold Cups were marked as GCNM and the Trophy followed and is the current production gun.

SharonAnne, welcome to the forum.

S&W's are only one addiction, Colt GCNM's are another.

My opinion is that most folks here are addicts--it is not a cheap fix though. These folks can get you too invest your last dollar--and thank them for it.  :D ;)
Honestly, these guns are pretty addictive. I love everyone I own.

Ive got one the same way. But the guy i bought it from had colt fit a nm barrel to the gun. If the slide is a trophy its probably a trophy. the differnce is that colt had fit the barrels and slides and bushings on the nm guns and didnt on the trophys. The trophys are great guns non the less. Just not fit up quite as tight. Mine is the best 1911 ive ever owned.

GrimJim,

I've shot Colt 1911's for years. The NM on your barrel indicates National Match. Over the years, since the NM was introduced,as a MK IV, prior to series 70 guns, it was called simply a  National Match. Soon after that, the Gold Cup was introduced, and the "NM" was incorporated into the Gold Cup descriptor. A little later, in the late 70's I think, the word "Trophy" was incorporated into the descriptor for what was Colt's premier target 45ACP.

Your gun will have the Eliason rear adjustable sight, the flat rib on the top of the slide, and the wide ribbed adjustable trigger. It should also have the conventional spur hammer.
The internal parts on your Trophy marked NM are very likely to be the same as the goverment model 1911's, except hand fitted to tighter tolerances, along with a tighter slide to frame fit, and better barrel lockup into the slide.

The early MK IV NM guns had an extra small spring on the lower right hand corner of the sear that helped to set the sear on the hammer hooks with very light triggers. I believe this feature was discontinued in the 60's prior to the release of the series 70 guns, althought, you may find a transitional series 70 with this feature.

Somewhere along the line, the collet barrel bushing was added to the design, but that didn't last very long, as they were prone to breaking with "full house" loads.

Around the time of the 3 year strike at Colt, the Gold Cups suffered, by being built with pretty much the same inner parts as the Goverment gun. This was done as a cost savings, and a convienence. I don't know what the parts makeup, or quality of fit is on the present day Gold cups, as I have not shot, or handled a newer one.

None of the above guns had a firing pin blocking safety system, as this feature was not added until the series 80 guns came out.

I am recalling all this info from memory, so don't hold me to the letter on all this. Some one else may have more info for you.

Tom
