Kimber Montana 84M .338 fed
« on: April 28, 2008, 12:37:07 PM »
I happened upon an estate sale a few weeks back and they had a few guns still left for sale. Wish I would have gotten there earlier cause this guy had a smokin collection and everything was for sale including hunting gear, truck, house, tools you name it....

Anyway, the only thing left by the time I got their that caught my eye was brand new Kimber 84M Montana in 338 fed. The man of the house had apparently died unexpectedly and his wife had a house full of people buying everything that wasn't nailed down. There was no price on the Kimber and few other guns still left so I asked, how much for the funny looking plastic gun with the silver bbl? She says...hows $300 sound??????? I could not reach for my check book fast enough........... Not sure what the issue was but she had the whole thing planned out to the point she had a local FFL dealer at the estate sale. When I was filling out the paper work ($65), he jokingly said to me, I really want to charge you $500 for this transfer.......He told me that they started with 37 guns. By the time I arrived there only 4 remaining. Do the math on that. 37 guns * $65 for the transfer.....$2,405. However, in Cal if you buy more then one gun at the same time its still $65.

We have a 10 day waiting period here in Cal so I got the gun and took it to the range yesterday. At 5pounds 1 ounce (not including scope & mounts) its amazing..... I threw on a VX2 3-9x40 and got it bore sighted. What a tack-driver. Off the bench with some real good support, I can lay a quarter over the groups with factory ammo!!!! Action is smooth and with the scope on it  looks pretty darn good.

I don't know what I'm going to use it for. I wanted a 338 but I don't feel the 338 fed is enough gun for my griz hunt next year. SO I will still be needing that 338 Mag, RUM or 375 Ruger or RUM. I may just take this on my Idaho black bear hunt coming up in late May. Was planning on using my 30-06....

For $300 I just could not pass it up. Extremely nice rifle, feather lite, but I do wish it was anyone of the other calibers this thing comes in like a 260 or 257.

And some people would call themselves a good practicing Christian even tho they knowingly took advantage of a greiving widow who obviously didn't know the value of the guns she was selling. Darn near theft it seems to me.

Since you have all the answers GB:

Were you there?

How much did her husband pay for the rifle?

What was the value of the 5,500 sq foot house in Las Gatos California, 2008 suv, 2007 BMW 745i and the 2006 Mercedez S Class she was also selling? Let me give you a clue here, Los Gatos is one of the most expensive places to live in world. The house goes for around $6m..

I;m sure your heart would have been bleeding for her financial situation.

Thanks for the good fellow Christian insult.

You still did not answer the question: How much did her husband pay for the rifle?

I don't know what I'm going to use it for.

At $300, it doesn't matter.  It's too good of a deal under the circumstances.   I don't think GB was insulting you...I think he was just saying that he would have acted differently.  Oh, and BMW didn't make the 745i in 2007.  It should be a 750.  If it's a 745, then it's an older model, probably a 2006 at most.

Your right its a 2006, my typo. I'm looking at the paper flyer they handed out.

BTW: I have now tried all three Federal factory loads in this gun and amazing the accuracy. It likes them all...But still its not enough gun for Griz IMO.

This is my 3rd Kimber product and I continue to be impressed with the quality, accuracy and customer service at Kimber. I did have a problem with my 45acp Ultra Carry when I 1st bought it. The thing would not group for  $**T and I knew something was bad wrong with the gun. I called Kimber explained the problem and they issued an RMA immediately over the phone. I shipped the gun in and the day it arrived they replaced the BBL and return shipped to the dealer same day.... You can't ask for better service. My ultra carry is a absolute tack driver.

I think I'm going with a Kimber in 338mag or 357 HH. That's what I really need.

My point about how much did they guy pay for the gun was,  I don't know and neither does GB. But what I do know is the lady had a folder with a bunch of papers in it. When I asked her how much, she went through the folder and pulled out a single sheet, looked at it and said hows $300 bucks... So she must have known something.

What I did notice about the sheet of paper she pulled out it had written across the top "PROXIBID". Well, I did a little research on the web and found out that PROXIBID is an on-line auction based out here in CAL. There are a couple of gun dealers that use it to move big lots of firearms they get at estate sales, etc.... Take a look at their web site. I think the guy got it off there in a huge lot auction. Probably for $200....so $300 seemed like a good deal to her.

I think its important to get information, ask questions, probe, etc, before you insult people. You never know what you might learn.
