Finally Success!!!
« on: May 02, 2008, 02:52:45 AM »
Finally, after a hard week of hunting and nothing not even a gobble we had some success.
We (me, my son, and my brother) got out of the truck around 4:55am (running a little late) and headed down the trail I hunted Monday and seen a Hen. It's been breaking dawn here around 5:20am or so. Anyway, as we got about half way down the trail...we were going to try an ambush down at the reservoir...a roosted turkey nearby started gobbling so we decided to set up shop right where I had seen that hen. After setting up the ground blind I gave out a couple yelps with a K&H Yella Hammer pot call. I got a bunch of gobbles back but after a few more shortly after I thought he was moving away as he now sounded to distance from us. I now think it was another gobbler off in the distance and our gobbler was heading striaght for us...quietly circling around our location. We heard him gobble a few more times and he was now real close so I just enticed him in with a couple clucks and purrs. About a minute later J. (my brother) whispered over he could see him up the hill (about 40-50yds away) where I then looked up and seen him circling around in front of us. It wasn't a minute or two later he was within no more than 20 yards (about 5 from our decoy) from us at full strut making a B-line and ready to fight the decoy and J. popped him dead in his tracks at approx. 5:30am.....what a morning...everything went perfect and we were all stoked as hell!!! Even though J. got the shot, I feel just as accomplished that I called him into us under 20 yards. The pics show the location of the blind to where the gobbler was taken, he was heading straight for my decoy and about 5 yards or less up to the left of the decoy in the bottom pic.
BTW, he isn't the biggest gobbler (I've seen 30lb'ers) out here in NE Massachusetts but a nice one none the less. He's around 20lbs after being field dressed. We'll find out in a while as we have to take him to check him in. His spurs measured 3/4" and has a 9" beard.

P.S. I let my brother take the shot because he's from Illinois and has only one more day to hunt here before he has to return and I didn't want him to go home empty handed. He took it with with a Rem. 870 using Rem. 3" #4 Turkey load....dropped him in his tracks.

Good gobbler!!
I got my first gobbler last Friday, 23#, 11 inch beard, 1 inch spur, in Lincoln County MN, shooting a 370 Winchester single shot at 40 yds.
