I found the best way to hunt Pa 'chucks is to just locate a field where there are woodchucks then glass.  I find the best times are (like most other game) mornings and evenings.  One of the places I hunt in Monroe county has no visible holes in the fields.  They must have dens just inside the woodline and venture to the field edges to feed.  I shoot most of them about 5-10 yards from the woodline.  With what I just said, I stopped by the property yesterday after an afternoon at the range and spend about 10 min. glassing the field edges and, lo and behold, there was a 'chuck working the edge.  I shot him at 2:45 in the afternoon with a 25-06 encore.  Where in NE PA do you hunt?  We should get together for a 'chuck hunt one day.

Grew up in Lawrence Co.  Spent my first 23 years of life there and hunted/killed many many groundhogs.

I started off with an old Winchester Model 61 (hamerless pump) as my hog gun.  With a .22 you really had to sneak up on them.  Typically I still hunted around the mounds and popped them when they showed some fur.

As I got older I progressed to my dad's .222 Remington 700.  That was a long range weapon.  Still could shoot up close, but it shined at further distances.  Farthest shot I ever killed a hog was at about 230 yards.

My buddy and I used to video tape our hunts.  There was nothing like replaying a good head shot in slow motion on the TV.  Ahh, those were the days.

Got a few groundhogs here in Arkansas, but they're not considered a game animal - so you can't hunt 'em.  We do have armadillos though!

Stalk and shoot them with a bow. It's a lot of fun.  Also good practice for deer & turkey season. :-D

Here in MI me and my buddies will locate a few chucker holes and see if their active. If they are well just check em every so often and if their out and don't see us well shoot em on the spot but if they get into their holes just sit and watch the hole. They'll stick their heads out within a couple of minutes giving you a perfect head shot if u'r in sight of the hole. It's a way we kill time and sometimes farmers want em out and we get pay'd :P

something to think about.  groundhogs are transient animals, if you shoot one close to his den, it,s likely that another one will move in very soon. because they only stay by a food sorce. dont leave them lay, move them from the hole, so there cousin will move in. this is true! and it can happen in a few days!  more than once, i have hit them badly and they went back into there hole,s to die,( the smell tells the tale) then cousin moves in! they will push the carcas out and move right in! i know this sounds far out, but it,s true! in ohio my boys and i are in charge of two farms. we were to shoot all ground hogs! we have a great time. this summer we took 31 hogs off of those two farms. we used a 22-250ai,222magai,222rem,22hornet imp,and a 22 pistole.
i have lots of good pictures, if any one wants to see.
