African DG hunting and guides shooting
« on: May 03, 2008, 09:09:49 AM »
I had been cleaning up my DVR drive and watched a bunch of taped episodes of Dangerous Game and Expedition Safari. I have about 2 dozen episodes taped, mostly buffalo but some elephant and hippo too.

One thing I noticed is in every single episode, the guide shoots after the first shot. In  most all cases except 2, the animals were visibly rocked and appeared to be hit perfectly. This was especially tru with buffalo, as they have a tell tale bucking gallop when hit well.

I can understand with a big cat or elephant in close proximity as the guide is obligated to keep people safe, but I would be pretty pissed if I made a good shot with a suitable gun and it becomes a shooting free for all on my dime under safe circumstances..

The guns used by the primary hunter ranged from 375 upto 50 class, with the majority at 375-416 class.

If that is what is expected as common course of action, than DG hunting is definitely not for me. I am not sure how one should gauge reasonable response from your guide based on what I have witnessed.

It is usual practice for some professional hunters to "collaborate" with the client and shoot right after they do but not all do this.  That would really piss me off as well and I would not hunt with a PH that insisted on doing this.

This would really take the pride out of taking a DG animal in my opinion. Hell, you'd never even know if you actually killed the animal or not. For all the money that you pay the least that you could expect is to get a reasonable opportunity to harvest the animal YOURSELF.

A PH should only shoot if there is  a "clear and present danger" if he doesn't shoot.

If you want to shoot my buffalo than you can pick up the tab.
