Looking for some tips
« on: May 03, 2008, 09:59:18 AM »
I just got a Bounty hunter Quick silver.  This is my first metal detector I bought it mostly to search for arrows that missed or went trough the target.
But I will be using it on some small public beaches around me.

The first day I went out and found an aluminum arrow that was lost for 5 months. But I could not find a carbon arrow with brass insert and steal point that was lost for less then 24 hours.
The same day The wife and I went out on the beach for an hour or so and found 5  lead sinkers  and like 45 cents.

Any tips on locating the carbon arrow?
how about searching on the beach I am thinking about going out first thing on Monday mornings because of the heavy use on weekends.

Any places I should stay away from and how can I tell if a place is off limits for me to search on?

I had the same problem with the carbon arrows but I was using them with a 70# compound bow. :(  Have no problem with the aluminums  shot from a 38# long bow. What does the Locator's manual say about calibrating for iron? Sounds like the Monday walk is a good plan.

Remember when your looking for the carbon arrow obviously you don't have as large a target. Make sure you swing so your coil pattern over laps enough to hit on the small knock insert or the point.  I know when I've looked for arrows they are often closer or farther than I thought when I shot.
As I'm sure you know keeping and eye on the flight line and just staying straight down that line gives you your best chance of finding it.
If it hasn't already been found by someone else it's just a matter of how much time you put into finding your target item.
Last summer I spend about 5 hours in the water covering a 50ft X 50ft area looking for a diamond ring before finding it on my first pass over it. It once took me 3 trips to the marina to find a very large stainless propeller in the same size area. Which means I went over it twice. Hence the keep your swing pattern relevant to the target size. I was looking and thinking to big and once I tightened the pattern found the propeller.
Good luck!
Keep at it!

thanks for the advice,
I am going back when the weather gets nice again.  I also am tinkling about getting one of the 3  clawed hand tools sold  to remove weeds from the flower beds so I do not have to use my knife and hands to dig.
