Going Grizzly Hunting
« on: May 04, 2008, 08:07:32 AM »
Taking the Handi 30-06 with me on a trip down into the Alaska Range hunting spring Grizzly.  We are leaving in the morning.  Will be using my old stand-by 180gr Nosler loads, same loads I shot the Caribou in the Avitar with.  Will let you know how it goes when we get back.

What Is A Veteran?
A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

Boy that is brave of you. I would not want to hunt big Hogs much less Grizzlies with a single shot. Good luck to you and come back safe. Dale

I have to agree with Dale.  Hunting Grizzly with a single shot is mighty brave of you.  I'd feel a lot safer packing a sidearm for backup like a .454 Casull Magnum just in case.

Good luck and have a safe and successful hunt.

Sounds like a blast.  You picked the perfect cartridge and bullet for the task.  Single shot no problem, may people can reload  just as fast as a bolt action in a single shot.

Have a fun time.

those who chamber a second round in a bolt action in the time it takes to reload a single shot must be arthritic.

With an ejector barrel and a butt stock ammo holder a well practiced marksman can fire a single shot very quickly.

I was elk hunting one time with a muzzle loader.  I heard 4 shots in about a minute.  They were only a few hundred yards from us in some really thick drainage bottom.  We heard some crashing and walked into an opening and found someones winter meat supply.  A minute or two later a guy came running through the brush.  I think he was shaking more than the aspen leaves.  We let him know that is must be his elk because we never fired a shot.  We said we didn't see the other guys who did either.  He said, oh, it was me.  Naw, couldn't be one guy.  We heard 4 shots bang bang bang bang.   Guy told us the story while we helped him cool the meat.  We even went back and helped him find his FOUR speed loaders.  There were the blue ones for .54 cal.  Everyone else we saw were carrying the red .50s.  When we asked how he did it, he replied "practice".  I go to the turkey shoots at Thanksgiving.  If you miss your first shot, you have to follow up quickly.  He said most guys missed because they did not know the exact range of the turkey target.  They would fire a sighter shot and follow up with a quick target shot.  He learned to shoot fast so he could hit the turkey first.  It worked on that elk.  He didn't miss it the first shot tho....................., nor the second, nor the third, nor the fourth..........

I hunt with muzzle loaders and contenders.  I would not be afraid to tackle grizz with a single shot.....but I would have a revolver on my hip and a buddy very close......

Steve  :)

Butt stock ammo holders are a big help but an old dude taught me a trick when I was a kid many years ago.  He hunted with a single shot 12 gauge and had made a holder for two shells that wrapped around the barrel and fore arm.  The two shells were on the right side of the barrel one above the other.  He would shoot, open the gun and stuff in another shell with his right hand, close it up and shoot again.  His left hand never moved off the fore end.  With a little practice it works great and is very fast.  Been using this trick for many years.

I hope he don't get ate....lol...Seriously though i read an article reviewing the bakail double rifles.  He took it on a russian brown bear hunt and it was a 30-06.  I think he killed it the first shot.  I guess it goes to show that you don't need a cannon to kill a bear.

Just drop it far enough ahead of him that he's gotta choose who to shoot first!! :o :D

Mike, TC makes a 2 cartridge carrier that works that way, but I dunno if it would fit a Handi. ;)

I got this forwarded to me the other day I thought it interesting.  Has anybody else seen this.

Subject: : Big Damn Bear!

!

-----

The downloaded pictures are of a man who works for the US Forest Service in Alaska and the bear he had to kill. (killed in self defense).

He was out deer hunting last week when a large grizzly bear charged him from about 50 yards away. ?The guy emptied his 7mm Magnum semi-automatic rifle into the bear and it dropped a few feet from him. ?The big bear was still alive so he reloaded and shot it several times in the head.

The bear was just over one thousand six hundred pounds. ?It stood 12' 6' high at the shoulder, 14' to the top of his head. ?It's the largest grizzly bear ever recorded in the world.

Of course, the Alaska Fish and Wildlife Commission did not let him keep it as a trophy, but the bear will be stuffed and mounted, and placed on display at the Anchorage airport to remind tourists of the risks involved when in the wild.

Based on the contents of the bears stomach, the Fish and Wildlife Commission established the bear had killed at least two humans in the past 72 hours including a missing hiker

The US Forest Service, backtracking from where the bear had originated, found the hiker's 38-caliber pistol emptied. Not far from the pistol were the remains of the hiker.  The other body has not been found.

Although the hiker fired six shots and managed to hit the grizzly with four shots (the Service ultimately found four 38 caliber slugs along with twelve 7mm slugs inside the bear's dead body), it only wounded the bear and probably angered it immensely.

The bear killed the hiker an estimated two days prior to the bear's own death by the gun of the Forest Service worker.

Think about this:
If you are an average size man; You would be level with the bear's navel when he stood upright. The bear would look you in the eye when it walked on all fours!  To give additional perspective, consider that this particular bear, standing on its hind legs, could walk up to an average single story house and look over the roof, or walk up to a two story house and look in the bedroom windows.
