500 S&W extract problem?
« on: May 04, 2008, 03:06:37 PM »
got a new Katahdin 500 S&W barrel and am having extraction problems due to the extractor slipping past the rather small rim of the 500 S&W. do not want to send my new toy back for warranty, can the extractor be removed and bent slightly in the middle to to keep it in contact with the case? wanted to check here first because sometimes things like the extractor will break before taking a slight bend, and I do not want that to happen and be worse off than I am now!

I don't have that exact barrel, or that problem for that matter.  I have bent the extractor on a couple of Contender barrels where the extractor was so tight that it was hard to remove the extracted shell.  I have not had one break, but if it did I am fairly sure that
TC would send you the parts to fix it, but I haven't needed to ask for anything since new ownership.

I had the same problem with a 500 S&W barrel.  T/C sent me a new extractor but it didn't solve the problem.  I sent the barrel back to them and they changed a spring; it now works fine.

I would bite the proverbial bullet and send the barrel back to T/C if I were you.  I got mine back in a week and a half to two weeks.

I had that problem on a few of my Encore barrels, I just bent the extractor and it worked like a charm.
