I got rid the Encore and went back to...

After seeing so many hunting pros? shooting T/C Encores, I thought I'd try them out for myself.

Well today, I got rid of my last Encore and went straight back to my favorite hunting rifle, the tried and true bolt action. I know a lot of hunters love the Encores, but for me, I was never able to get them to shoot accurately.

For the last 2 days, I've walked the local gun show and my local Bass Pro Shop looking at numerous Brownings, Rugers, Tikkas, Remingtons and Savages. Today I finally bought another rifle, a 
Remington 700 SPS stainless in 308 Win.

The rifle has the X-Pro Trigger, R-3 recoil pad, and the action is sitting nice and square in the stock. I'm very pleased and hope the rifle will be an accurate shooter. 

I'd like to add the sales people from Bass Pro were all the absolute best! I can't say enough about the excellent service Mike and Liz provided! Unlike a lot of other horror stories you hear about gun salesmen, the people at the Ft. Myers Bass Pro are good and very helpful people.

I had a contender in 17 Rem, but trigger was not for me. Much happier with the model seven in 17 Rem.

I'm out of the encore business and couldn't be happier. Bought couple or three Handi's for what I sold one Encore set-up for.
And so far, my Handi's shoot just as good as my Encore ever did.

Yep, I agree. None of the Encores I had would shoot as accurate and consistently as my bolt actions. The Encore didn't carry as well either.

I believe I'm going to love this stainless Remington SPS! I wouldn't be a bit surprised if I end up buying more Remingtons in the future...they've always been one of my favorite rifles.

I bet Graybeard would agree...it's hard to beat a good shooting 700!

I'm a little curious on how your encores shot.  I have one with a 26" 30-06 barrel and a 209x50 barrel.  They both shot good enough to hunt with.

I'm partial to the encore because I took my first deer ever with one, but when I hunt something that can bite back I take a bolt guns that holds more than one bullet.

Nobody gave the classic answer of "buy both?"

I would like to say I have many different guns...Remington, Winchester, Savage, TC's and others.  The best group I've ever shot was with my Encore.  Standard 220 Swift 26" bull barrel from Cabela's with 50 grain V-Max bullets over H414.  The 5 shot group was .362" CTC...but this was a great handload.  I've never had a problem finding a good load for a gun with some work.  But I had factory 220 Swift ammo that was horrible.

I own two Model 700's, both Classics...one 257 Roberts that is new in the box with original warranty paperwork and manual (find of my life) and a 2003 model in 300 Savage.  I adjusted the trigger on the 300 Savage to around 3.25 lbs and it is crisp.  This gun is amazing and I'm just finding the right load for it.  Several I've shot out of this gun are less than 1" for five shots.  The best so far is a 150 grain SPT over I believe Varget...but I'm still tinkering, the group was around .60" CTC.

All guns with some work can be made to shoot well with some time on the bench, granted this is if you are a reloader.  All factory ammo is not equal…price won’t bring you accuracy and some guns take a bit of effort to find a factory round they like.
