Cartridge case ID
« on: July 18, 2003, 03:03:37 PM »
:D  I found a 45-70 case yesterday while out hiking in the Sierra. It appears to be copper and is headstamped R at 12 o'clock, 84 at 3 PM, F at 6PM and 2 at 9 PM. What do these letters and numbers indicate? Manufacture date? Thanks for any info.

In the military today, we headstamp the last two numbers of the year on all of our ammo so we can keep up with it in ammo rotation.  Since the .45-70 was originally a military round, this could be the case for your brass, also.  If so, it would have to be 1884.  Hope this gives you a starting point.

The R at 12O'clock indicates that it was loaded for the rifle rather than the carbine.

84 is the year of manufacture.

F indicates that it was loaded at the Frankfort Arsenal.

2 is the month it was loaded.
