When did ruger stop making the 44 carbine? Was it supply and demand that promoted its demise?

1985 I believe. The little rifle just did not sell. As with many rifles, the minute you could not get it, the more desirable it became. It lessened in cost and desirability while they made its successor, the Deerfield from 1999 to 1006. Now they both command a premium price. I have owned both and prefer the Deerfield (99/44). I will own the 99/44 as long as I own firearms, as a small semi automatic .44 magnum rifle can be quite useful under the right circumstances. I use mine as a camp gun and for still hunting the cleared hardwood forest patches here in MN.

They also made the lever action in essentially the same configuration carbine.It is a model 96/44.It was discontinued in 2007.

     I have one of the lever 44/99's It's a blast to shoot this gun loaded with 250 kieth bullets about 1200 fps is a good little light load that is accurate out to 100 yrds or so . loaded with a 300 gr xtp you can shoot through a white tail shoulder to hind quarter. It is a very versatile gun in my safe. I carry it with a 44 super alaskan hand gun, so I can interchange ammo. I guess its kind of a novelty to carry two guns with the same ammo  kind of like the old west.  The only gripes I have of this rifle is I can't find a really nice peep sight for it , amd the clip only holds 4 rounds.
