.44 Speer 225 grn Half Jacket?
« on: May 11, 2008, 05:40:49 AM »
Picked up a box of these at the local flee market today. My question is how well do the half jacketed bullets perform on deer and where should I crimp them since they have no cannelure. They will be used in a ruger semi-auto carbine.  Never loaded any half jacketed bullets before so just curious what you guys think.  The H110 is at the ready!

I do not think these bullet will be good deer bullets, especially from a carbine. These bullet are made to expand fast at low velocities and will fail totally if you hit bone, would be my guess. I would recommend you shoot these bullets at groundhogs and get some 240 gn. bullets for deer. Remember, your velocity will be acoulpe of 100 fps. faster a carbine than from a revolver. I would recommand a Soft Point bullet instead of a Hollow Point also.

These were the first jacketed bullets I used in reloading, for both my .357 Magnum and my .44 Magnum.  Why were they the first?  Because they were the only ones available in the early 1960's...

I used them in handguns (Ruger single-actions) and the original Ruger carbine.

They worked just fine on any animal that happened to be the subject of my hunt, from 'coons to bear.
