I'm glad she understands........
« on: May 11, 2008, 06:16:58 AM »
Worked all weekend building a bench, getting all the equipment set up exactly where I wanted it, reread my loading manual and instructions on everything. Went to a coupla local gun supply stores and bought another manual, case polish, bullets, primers, extra shell holders and a pound each of 2400 and H110. On the way by, I stopped at the pet store and bought a bag of crushed walnut shells. Got home, loaded the tumbler with empties and media and while the brass was getting cleaned up I read the new manual......twice. Feeling confident I could really do this, I went upstairs to the spare room where I had set up and did a test box each of .357 and .460s. I started with relatively mild loads of each using 2400 and was surprised at the ease and simplicity once I figured out how to set the dies. I was also impressed with the accuracy of the powder thrower(even tho I didn't trust it or myself and weighed every charge), once I had it set it threw every charge perfectly. When I was done, I was quite impressed with my equipment, my setup and my results.

Anyway, my wife walks in as I'm admiring my work and I ....being proud as 'ell, just have to show her the two boxes of shiny, new, home rolled cartridges that I had assembled with my own two hands. She just laughed and as she turned to walk out the door made the comment, "wow, after only an investment of almost $800 and two days of hard work you end up with 40 shells......that you aren't even sure will go bang when you pull the trigger.....I can't wait to spend all that money you just saved us." :-\
"where'd you get the gun....son?"

Take her out to dinner and explain that the treat is on reloading savings.  Also a good analogy is to tell her it's like putting extra insulation in the attic.  It cost more now but it will save over the long pull.  If she believes that, tell her you are gonna buy a new rifle next week on you "potential" reloading savings.  :D

The more you spend the more you save. I`ve been loading on a 550 Dillon since the 1980`s. I have no idea of how many different rounds I can load on my press, but I just put in an order to Dillon for tool heads, powder dies, powder funnels and a set of dies, another $215 invested. I`m getting ready to buy an airplane with all of the monet I`m saveing. DO NOT let you wife read this post. ;D

Buck, been reloading for over 34 years, and casting bullets for almost 20. Not sure if your wife is like the typical women. Pick out a pair of shoes she bought to go to a wedding reception, and a dress she bought for a formal dinner, and tell her, 5 years from now, IF, they still fit, we'll go out for a fancy dinner and dancing, and you'll pay for it with the money you saved by reloading.
Chances are, she'll have spent more money on cloth's and shoe's than you will on reloading equipment, can't get a dime for any of them at a garage sale, but your reloading stuff will sell for more than what you paid for it. That is, unless she just throws it in the dumpster.  gypsyman
We keep trying peace, it usually doesn't work!!Remember(12/7/41)(9/11/01) gypsyman

The more you spend the more you save.

It just doesn't get any truer than this.  :o ;D

The thing is, you will be able to get a lot more shooting in for the same monies.

On the flip side ask her why she needs a $100 pair of shoes to go out for a $25 dinner. ::)
Just another worthless opinion!!

actually my ol' lady is pretty cool about  it........she just made the comment in jest, and not as a real put down.  She realizes at my age that I'll never shoot enough to recoup my investment, but she also realizes that the time I spend with my two boys shooting/hunting and now reloading is priceless. She also knows that the tools and the experience will be passed on long after we're both gone. I believe that's really what it's all about........not the money.

...and she knows where to find you instead of wondering how loaded you got again before coming home.
What is the point of Life if you can't have fun.
