Sounds plausible
« on: May 11, 2008, 02:06:58 PM »
Hello
Just need a heads up. Seems common to read of people firing 357mag in 357 max etc is this the same for the 22's

Is it safe to fire 22LR in 22mag?

What happens to the accuracy?

How much lead/copper coating builds up in the end of the chamber i.e. how frequent is cleaning required?

Appreciate any answers or experience

No it's not safe, the 22mag chamber is larger in diameter, you risk a ruptured case and the subequent gas release back thru the firing pin area and past the hammer. :o :'(

There is several cartridges that share the same case with the only difference being the length.  ie (45-70,45-90)(45LC,454Casull)(.22RF Short, .22 Long, .22 LR)(.38 Short, .38SPL, .357 Mag).

You can fire the 22 WRF (Winchester Rim Fire) as a lower power load in the 22 Magnum Rim Fire chamber safely.  It's the same diameter, just a bit shorter.

Works the same as firing the 22 short, long or long rifle cartridges in the long rifle chamber.

Why all the talk of firing rounds through chambers that were not meant for them?

Wouldn't it just be easier to buy the correct ammo?

Quite often folks would like a lower power or less expensive round for plinking, small game hunting or other reasons.  The ability to shoot the 22 short and long cartridges in the long rifle chamber are classic examples of this option.  The 22 WRF, which is a very old cartridge, gives the same option in the 22 Mag chamber.  This does no damage to the gun and allows it to be used for many more purposes.

In the center fire rounds the ability to fire less powerful cartridges in a longer chamber often gives significant cost savings and the reduced recoil allows many folks to more fully enjoy their time at the range.  These advantages plus the many more choices in bullet weights, types and velocities gives the shooter the option of tailoring his ammunition choice to the job at hand.

If you have any weapons that have interchangeable ammunition options you might give it a try, it's kind of like getting another gun for the cost of a box of shells.

Thanks for the reply's
Appreciate all the info. Sure beats trial and error.

I asked because I have a specific need for a 22LR. It would have been nice to be able to boost the performance on the odd occasion it was required.

I wasn't sure if the feeding limitations in magazine rifles was the reason I hadn't heard it done before. Or as is the case it is unsafe.

Thanks
Mike
