? use of a wax cookie or cylinder wipe of lube
« on: May 11, 2008, 05:15:47 PM »
I would like to switch to BP for my cowboy loads.  I have both real BP and pyrodex as well as 777.  I have two molds both designed for smokeless.  I shoot a trapper in .45 so I don't need that much lube I guess.  I was thinking of casting a bunch using my soft BP lube and useinge a thin layer of beeswax as a soft gas check.  Have any of you tried something like this?  JB

Not in a 45 Long Colt but in a 45-70, I use a lube cookie, (card wad, lube, card wad). It provides enough lube for what I need.

Don't see why the beeswax wouldn't do it in 45 LC.

Try it, you can always try something like what I use.

What bullets are you pouring?

I use 777 because of clean up issues, and I know people say BP is easy to clean, but I prefer Triple seven. You can use smokeless lube with this which is what I do with a card over the powder.

There must be a million ways to shoot BP. Over the years though, I have opted for simpler methods that work well. These days I only shoot true BP. Costs drove me to that mostly. I don't do anything unusual, except maybe shoot big lube bullets that I cast myself. With that much lube, I have little hard fouling issues, the fouling stays soft and clean up is a breeze with Windex with vinegar. I shoot multi day events and never felt the need to clean anything except the shotgun. There I have a problem of using plastic wads and no lube. I find that if after a days shooting I shoot a round or two of smokeless shotgun through each barrel and then hit it with the windex, rip a paper towel in two, then they come clean in one or at the most two passes.
Longrange shooting in 38-55 and 45-70 I use milk carton wads under the bullet and on top of the powder. My bullets are fairly soft and the wax wads help preserve the bullet base, since I shoot 777 loads for long range. Clean up the same. Windex.
Just the way I do it and there are many other ways to obtain the same results.  :)
