Letchworth Park deer???
« on: May 12, 2008, 08:28:51 AM »
Visited the park for first time and saw many deer but they all looked different;  Strange dark color and faded spots on winter coat.  Are these native whitetail or has NYS introduced a sub species?  Or am I crazy???

You're just crazy...No seriously, I don't know the answer to your question but I would be interested to find out.  I have never been to Letchworth myself...Just one of those things that I always planned to do but never got there...

Letchworth is more than 200 miles from me and it was my first time in Finger Lakes/Allegheny region of NYS south of Thruway beyond Bass Pro shop in Auburn, but my wife has wanted to go there for years so we made it a Mother's Day trip.  Its beautiful country rich in history.  We also squeezed in Genessee River Dam in Mount Morris, Rockwell Museum in Corning, Bully Hill winery, and historic village/museum in Mumford.  Letchworth is nice place to spend a day with family and has a variety of accomodations if you wish to spend more time.

Letchworth is in my corner of the world. I believe you saw some "normal" whitetails, but some look a little ragged as they are coming into their summer coat and shedding the heavier winter fur.
The park is pretty during most seasons, outstanding in fall colors & winter whites.  A great resource.
A society only becomes great when its old men plant trees that they know they will never enjoy the shade of.
