Mansfield, OH civil war show pics
« on: May 12, 2008, 04:07:47 PM »
thought I would try to post some pics from the Mansfield show.

the last one stretches some definitions of a cannon but it is too cool not to share (it's old enough and I think it's a
one inch bore). sorry if the pics are blurry it was raining alot. Got my first artillery piece (the guys at Gillmore ordinance made me buy it, thats my story) it is a 2.5 inch bore brass coehorn early British style with the monogram. working on some smoke and fire pics , but i'm still trying to figure the camera (all I get is pics of drifting smoke).

agodwin01,

Thanks for posting the pics. Looks like it was a good turn out. I even see a large naval piece in the field. That one must have been fun to move. Looking forward to pics of your new toy.... ;D

Excellent photos, looks like a fun time.

Congrats on your new mortar! Peer pressure is a terrible thing! ;D

As far as fire & smoke pics, does your camera have a video mode?

I've never managed to get decent photos with the shutter, the fireball is there and gone so fast that timing it right is virtually impossible (at least for me). Instead I shoot in video mode and then select individual frames from the video. The result does not have the resolution of a still picture, but I'd rather have a small photo than a missed shot.

Great pix!

I had a conflict and couldn't make it to Mansfield this year :(

Anyway, one thing I couldn't help but notice about the "naval" looking gun in one of the pictures was the tiny trunnions.  Not sure what drove them to that but I don't want to knock anyone who builds cannons and then shoots and displays them.

A good rule of thumb for anyone building a "gun" is to make the trunnions the same diameter as the bore.  Howitzers and mortars usually have trunnions of smaller-than-bore diameter.

The "naval" looking gun is made out of fiberglass from  the film "Master and Commander - The Far Side of the World"

that explains why it didn't sink in the mud. I wanted to go check out that row of cannons but they were doing the demonstration when I was out there and I forgot to go back. there is alot of other stuff at the show and was a little overwhelming for my first trip.

Well, I guess that changes my comment about "must have been fun to move" to "It must be easy to Move". Thanks for letting us know that it is fiberglass. It looks pretty good! Anyone have close up photos?

Thanks. Hard to believe that it is fiberglass. But, I guess that's what movies are made of..... :)
