Easy Livin'
« on: May 12, 2008, 04:59:51 PM »
I would just like your ideas, opinions, thoughts, and solutions about this situation I'm going to write about.  I'm gonna try to be as neutral as possible in my presentation and let the conversation go where it will.  Do you think it is right?  Wrong?  How should it be done?  What should be done?  And so forth.

This evening a friend and I were going to dinner and my friend pointed out a house up a hollow and commented that the man that lived there was mildly retarded.  Too retarded to be considered capable of holding a job.  And so he draws a check from SSI. And also draws MedicAID benefits.  My friend commented that he was smart enough to work jobs like mowing yards, weed eating, maintaining cemeteries, cutting fire wood, and such.  And he was smart enough to work only for cash money.  He was living with a woman that had some sort of disability also, not mental, that was also drawing a check from SSI and MedicAID benefits. They have 8 children.  All of whom are mildly retarded.  None of them have ever been to any school of any sort.  All 8 of the kids gets a SSI check and MedicAID benefits.  My friend said she had talked to the old man and various of the children and while they may not have been the sharpest knives in the drawer, she had taught kids in school that seemed no brighter.  And that the old man could certainly figure out in his head what you owed him if he was making xx dollars and worked xx hours without counting on his fingers.

What do you'll think about this??

If this tale is in fact, true, then I would say that it serves as an object lesson that well intentioned social programs must be carefully monitored so they don't become the sponsors of such perversion.  On the other hand, they are probably no different than a whole heck of a lot of inner city family type groups, except that it sounds like they do honest work for their pocket change, as opposed to mugging, burglary and drug dealing.

Doesn't sound like he is very retarded, seems like he is working the Gov. program pretty well.
I don't have a problem with a guy like this that will work and he will probably teach his kids too.
I do have a problem with people like him that will not work and are not retarded.
I also have a problem with illegal aliens that will work and work the gov. program and send 50-60%
of what they make to the mother country.
thank you for this opportunity

Well, since this didn't get too much of a play, --I guess everybody is too enthralled by the godless, subhuman mooslums.
My take is, I don't really have a problem with the guy and don't have a problem with him getting out and trying to hustle some extra bucks.  My problem is with the 8 kids.  I have a real problem when someone is living on the dole and still breeding like rats.  Whether they're retarded or not. Makes no difference whether they are in WV or some inner-city ghetto, the problem is self sustaining if you don't stop the irresponsible breeding.

Of course he can vote. And owns a car or more. With 10 welfare checks and food stamps coming in the house every month, he's getting several thousand dollars.  And you folks that think he's kewl for working the system, don't seem to realize that it's your money he's spending.
Interesting point, in WV, if a applicant cannot read, a person from the DMV will give him the test orally. Ain't that a warm and fuzzy feeling whilst you race down the highways that Uncle Sugar has built for you with gov'ment pork.

I never said nor meant I think he is kewl. You perceived what I said wrongly and was far from what I meant or said. I merely stated that he seems smart enough to "work" the system....meaning obviously he is smart enough to get what he wants from it and maybe he isn't as dumb as he portrays himself to be. As far as where the money comes from.... everyone knows where it comes from.....just like where all the money is coming from that goes to all the illegal aliens sucking off welfare

Kind of a tough one.  The dole for this guy should be capped after 2 or 3 kids so that there is no incentive for more kids.  Gov handouts should be linked to some kind of work for the handout,,,picking up trash, raking the couthouse lawn, etc.  Don't work then your $ get curtailed. Hardcase disablied are just one of those things and I guess we take care of them till they're gone.  Coomodities, etc. could also be substituted for 4 checks. Does this guy have a car and drive and vote?

Amen brother. The welfare system is an honorable idea that has been taken advantage of for too long. Help people that are down on their luck so they have a chance to get back on their feet. The problem now is they don't have any incentive to get back on their feet, if they were ever standing in the first place.

I dated a girl when I was younger, single mother, on welfare, living in a cheap apartment. She was taking care of her kid and going to nursing school. After she graduated she got a good job and didn't need it anymore. That's what the program is for not to support you for the rest of your life.

He is staying home every day doing pretty much what he wants to and the government is sending him his wife and all the kids checks. You on the other hand are going to work every day have little or no free time to do the things you enjoy, sending the government at least 1/3 of all you earn and that is before you add all the hidden taxes in, and you have the nerve to call him retarded.

I'll toss my two cents in as a former teacher.  I was not cut out to teach so I left and started my own business.

My first job was teaching art in a small community with a K-12 one building school.  I was having trouble getting a young man to follow written directions one day. I soon realized the young man could not read.  I discretely ask him if he needed help learning to read.  His reply, and I quote,"My mom can't read and she still gets a check each month".

My second and last job was teaching high school art in a little larger community.  This school stuck the kids who could not pass woodshop in the art class.  They called it an "Alternative Program".  I taught a lot of those "mildly retarded" kids.  They had sliding grading scales where if a kid tested at one level he only needed a 50% to pass if another tested such and such he only needed a 40% to pass, etc.  It always amazed me that a kid with learning difficulties could figure out exactly how much work he needed to do to get his minimum percentage to pass.  I kid you not they would work and do well up to that magic point and then I had a heck of a time getting anything else out of them for the rest of the semester.

I have seen way to many of these kids get an excuse handed to them by the education system and then when they graduated with their "attendance diploma" the gov. takes up where the school left off by giving them a check each month.

Yes I probably am a bit tainted and this is one of my soapbox issues.  That being said, A person should have to have a real disability that truly "PREVENTS" them from working in order to draw a gov. check.  Maybe for guys like this the gov could exempt him from taxes on the odd job work he does and let him mow as many yards as he wants.  But by george don't take money out of my pocket to pay this guy's bills so he can stay home and keep his wife pregnant.  I would be willing to bet this guy could do just fine ridding the back of a trash truck and many other honest respectable jobs.  Both of the schools I worked in had custodians who were "mildy retarded".  All five of them were hard working people  who did their jobs well.

I don't know what the answer is.  I do know that it is not right to expect hard working citizens to foot the bill for some guy who probably can work a real job at some level but just doesn't want to.  I am a firm believer in "If you won't work neither shall you eat".

My 2 cents,

Ray

Kinda reminds me of a suckling pig.  That piglet will get on an ole sows tit and suck until it is fat as can be, or until the ole sow gets tied of it and pushes the piglet away.

To a large extent, welfare recipients are the same way, they stay on the tit until it runs dry.
