450 Marlin twist rate
« on: May 13, 2008, 01:52:03 AM »
I just ordered a MGM 26" 450 marlin barrel for my Encore. The twist rate is 1:14. I noticed most lever actions are 1:20. What is the reason for such a fast twist?

Well I went to sight it in Sunday and it was a no go. Installed the new MGM barrel and the hammer would not pull back. Any ideas? All my other barrels work fine. They are T/C barrels.
Somebody has to know something about twist rate for my 450m.

Well, I'll chime in since no one else has. I really don't have a good answer for you, though. As you noted, Marlin puts a 1/20 twist on them, as they do with the .45/70 and the newer .444's. The .44 mags and earlier .444 have a 1/38 ( I think it was ), and some folks said the slower twist would not stabilize heavier bullets, especially in the slower .44 mag.
My only guess for your faster rate of twist is to be sure it accommodates HEAVY bullets in hand loads.

Well hopefully the 350gr Hornady ammo I have works. My hammer works with my 450 barrel now. I was told to slam it shut hard. It worked.

Your 350 grain factory ammo is actually on the lighter side of the bullet selection for your set-up. I handload those bullets for my Guide Gun and they are great. If you load, you may be able to use heavier, longer bullets (from the 45-70 selection) if you wanted to. Good choice of caliber!  I like to see that others won't let this fine cartridge die off!  Good luck with your new rifle

How is the recoil with the mighty 450 Marlin in the Encore?  I have been thinking about a barrel for my Prohunter.

Why don't you ask the MGM?  ;)
