What donor barrel?
« on: May 14, 2008, 12:16:25 PM »
What kind of donor barrel would it take to make a 7.62x39 barrel? Is this possible? Is it feasible  or is it cost prohibitive?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks, Robert.

The first one that comes to mind is a British SMLE, bore dia is .311 and I got one from E-Gunparts.com. They are not very expensive, but make sure you check the condition of the bore. The first one I got was awful, the second darned near new.hth   Doug

Maybe I should have said I wanted to make a 7.62x39 barrel for a Handi.
Should have been clearer.
Thanks, Robert

I was just stating that you can probably use a standard 308 barrel....

As nothing in the .308 cal that H&R makes now will clean up as a re-chamber you are looking at a re-bore and chamber job , around $300 + .

Depending on how heavy a barrel you want to go with , the 223 BB in 24" would work well and you could have it bored to either .308 or .311 to fit your bullet choice . The 26" 25/06 would also work well .

Thanks for all the help guys. I knew I would get just the right answers here.
Looks like getting a re-bore or re-chamber job will be prohibitively expensive.
Back to the drawing board!
Thanks to all, Robert

This could be blasphemy here but rossi makes a 7.63x39....Its a very similar gun in the same price range....You could give your Handis something to pick on while hanging out in the safe....lol

STUMPJMPR

You make a good point , for those looking for a single shot 7.62x39 the Rossi is not a bad rifle , I have looked at them a few times and many members of GBO have them . I just don't like the design of the stocks , they just don't feel right to ME , but most like the way they shoulder .

Around here that go for about $10 less than the H&Rs , the finish I think is also on par with the H&R / NEF guns .

A surplus 91/30 Mosin Nagant or M44 would work. I recently bought a M44 for $79.99. Buy the entire rifle, strip off the barrel and sell the rest, or whatever...

Thanks,
Ron

I thought we were talking about a stub job here, sorry... What the heck, maybe I'll strip the barrel off my M44 and turn it into a .32 S&W long acc. Handi rifle barrel!

Buy a British 303 barrel, they are plenty long enough to cut off all the bad parts and have plenty of barrel left for any .32 cal, I have done two that way, it is best to start with a 20 ga barrel for the stub because the 303 barrels taper down quickly and makes it more difficult to fit into the stub.  Chamber thickness could be an issue with the 7.62X39, but if you use the 20 ga stub you can get a very tight fit barrel to stub and then fill any tiny gap by coating the barrel and stub with epoxy before you slip them together and put the nut on.  By the time you cut the chamber off an M44 you may not have enough barrel left to be legal, plus most of the M44's have been counter bored some due to bad cleaning practices.  Larry
